The Rich Heritage of Worcester Art Museum 🏛️🎨
Established in 1898 in Worcester, Massachusetts, the Worcester Art Museum boasts a profound history and an impressive collection of over 38,000 works of art from around the world, spanning ancient to modern times. Its holdings include ancient Roman mosaics, European and American masterpieces, and an extensive array of Japanese prints. Since acquiring the John Woodman Higgins Armory Collection in 2013, it also houses the second-largest collection of arms and armor in the Americas! 🗡️🛡️ Exhibition Highlights 🌟 📍 Ancient Roman Floor Mosaics In 1930, the museum collaborated with the Louvre, Princeton University, and the Baltimore Museum of Art to excavate the ancient city of Antioch (now in Turkey), largely destroyed by an earthquake in 526 AD. Archaeologists uncovered around 90 public and private buildings, along with sculptures, coins, lamps, and other artifacts. The most significant finds were hundreds of ancient Roman floor mosaics—like the ones you can see here today! Below is an illustration of the archaeological excavation. 🏺✨ 📍 Medieval French Benedictine Monastery This monastery once served as a meeting hall for monks. Its Gothic stone arches, stained-glass windows, and grand fireplace still inspire awe today. Originally built in the 12th century, it remained in use until the French Revolution. In 1933, the monastery was carefully dismantled and rebuilt inside the Worcester Art Museum.
