The Stunning Sea of Saint-Malo in Summer 🌊✨

Saint-Malo is absolutely the most deserving tourist city in the Brittany region! 🏰 The bus dropped us right at the visitor center entrance, just outside the gates of the old town (intra muro), and the lively crowd welcomed us immediately. For accommodation, staying in the old town is the most convenient 🏠. No matter where you’re coming from, the bus is the easiest option, with its prime drop-off spot. Walking from the train station to the old town takes about half an hour—not too bad, but hey… the charm of Saint-Malo lies in the old town! Speaking of buses, my FlixBus from Mont Saint-Michel took only 30 minutes and cost just €4—way faster and cheaper than the train. But, surprise surprise, it was delayed by an hour with no warning 😐. The bus was nearly empty, so maybe it was intentional? The old town is packed with places to eat, shop, and explore 🛍️🍴. Must-tries include the sweet and savory pastries from Kouign Amann—Brittany’s famous foods include savory galettes (stuffed with cheese, eggs, ham, or sausage) and sweet crêpes (spread with all kinds of toppings). Then there’s the iconic Breton butter cake, which is pure sweetness. The classic traditionnel version is loaded with sugar and butter (€2.50—just try a bite!). The apple version is also a classic, but honestly, I preferred the savory galette with ham and eggs. Another hotspot is the ice cream shop Sanchez 🍦—almost everyone walking by had one. The most popular flavor is caramel beurre salé (salted butter caramel), but vanilla and other dazzling options are also worth a try. €4 gets you a huge scoop! As for sights, don’t stress—Saint-Malo is all about chilling 😎. Find a cozy spot to sip on cider or another local drink, or order a big pot of mussels (or other seafood—though for oysters, head to Cancale 🦪) with a glass of white wine, and just relax. The seaside ramparts are perfect for a stroll—walk them multiple times a day to see the changing tides 🌊. At low tide, you can even walk out to the fort, and the beach is covered in live snails 🐌 and seashells 🐚. Honestly, you could probably gather dinner just by picking a few! The famous diving platform by the sea looks completely different depending on the tide—it’s most dramatic in the afternoon. Saint-Malo’s tides are legendary 🌊📅, though right now isn’t peak tidal season. Yesterday’s highest tide was around 11 meters, with the biggest waves around 10 AM–12 PM (check exact times online). Watching the tide roll in is a must—head to Bar de l’Univers (pictured in Fig. 14), where wooden stakes plunge into the sea and get battered by the waves. Grab a drink and enjoy the show! The cathedral and the monument behind it are also worth a quick visit to learn about Saint-Malo’s history as a pirate stronghold 🏴☠️. At 7 AM, before the tourists flood in and shops open, the old town has a completely different vibe 🌅. In rainy Brittany, a dry day in Saint-Malo is a gift ☀️. Any way you choose to enjoy the seaside is valid—and if not, the bustling old town has its own summer magic. #SaintMalo #Brittany #KouignAmann #FranceTravel 🌍✈️
