Kouign Amann de Saint-Malo — Restaurant in Saint-Malo

Delicious rich buttery pastries local to the Brittany area. I believe it was named as the most butteriest pastry in the whole world by the New York Times a few years back! They were not lying it is absolutely delicious and this particular bakery although in the middle of a tourist hotspot is always busy and provides a product that is genuine to its roots. It seems to be a round multi-layered cake, originally made with bread dough (nowadays sometimes viennoiserie dough), containing layers of butter and incorporated sugar, similar in fashion to puff pastry albeit with fewer layers. The cake is slowly baked until the sugar caramelizes and the butter (in fact the steam from the water in the butter) expands the dough, resulting in its layered structure. Amazing place but, for us, not for the kouign amann at all - it's their ker-y-poms. Oh. My. God. How delicious are those, - half a thinly- sliced apple encased in soft sweet fragrant pastry. You can see them being made and baked in front of you, which is lovely in itself, but the taste of those lovelies is pure heaven. And the cost, which seems to be stuck in time, is really so little that is an excuse to get a box of them (which is gorgeous and a work of art in itself). From afar i had the perception based on the branding that it was a very touristy little pastry shop but the queue made me curious anyway. Service was fast despite the line and i thoroughly enjoyed my kouign amann. Its crispy and very flavorful, unlike a couple i tasted before from other bakeries that was a bit oily and soft to my taste. I got the normal and the apple one.
