This Hidden Gem Fish & Chips Spot is Worth Taking a Train For
The Golden Chippy 📍 Address: 62 Greenwich High Rd, London SE10 8LF This fantastic fish and chips shop is near Greenwich. Fish and chips used to be a British national dish I didn’t “get” at first—but now I love it more and more! Before, I mostly bought it from the chain Poppies, but this time I spotted this spot with an amazing 4.7/5 Google rating. I took the tube and then a train all the way to Greenwich to try it—and it was such a pleasant surprise! The only downside? It’s a bit far. The tiny shop only has a few tables, but the food is incredible, the fish is super fresh, and the staff are all so friendly 😊. Even though it takes at least 40 minutes to get there, I’d happily make the trip again and again—it’s that good! 🐟 The Fish (Fried & Grilled) I ordered two types of fish: the classic cod and skate (a cartilaginous fish). Even the standard portion is huge (they have larger sizes too!), and every bite impressed: - Fried Fish: The outer crust is crispy and fragrant—fried to perfection, but never greasy (you can’t even taste that “oily” aftertaste). There’s zero fishy smell, just pure freshness. The fish inside is firm yet tender and juicy. Cod and skate have slightly different textures (cod is flakier, skate is a bit denser), but both are absolutely delicious 🤤. - Grilled Fish Hack: If you order the large portion of fish, you can add £2 to get it grilled instead of fried. It takes a little longer to prepare, but trust me—it’s worth the wait! On my first visit, I got grilled rock (another cartilaginous fish), and the first bite blew me away. It had the pure, original flavor of the fish—super fresh and juicy, with a firm texture. The cartilage in the middle even has a crunchy, chewy bite! Grilled fish lets the natural sweetness of the seafood shine way more than fried fish—I loved it so much. On my second trip, I tried grilled skate too: its flesh was softer and more tender (different from rock’s firmness), and you eat it with the cartilage too—so good! 🍟 Sides & Sauce - Must-have Sauce: Do not forget the tartar sauce! It’s creamy, tangy, and pairs perfectly with both fried and grilled fish—cuts through any richness and adds a fresh zing. - Fries: They’re thick-cut chips, but honestly? They’re just “okay”—not crispy enough on the outside, a bit undercooked. - Healthier Option: Go for the jacket potato instead! It’s baked until the skin is crispy and the inside is soft and fluffy—warm, filling, and a great lighter side to balance the fish. 💰 Price - Eat-in (dine-in): Prices range from around £10 to £15 (great value for the portion size!). - Takeaway: Even cheaper—all options are under £10. Total bang for your buck for such high-quality fish and chips! #LONDONEATS #LONDONFOODHUNT #UKLIFE #LONDON #LONDONLIFE #LONDONTRAVEL #GREENWICHLONDON #MYFOODDIARY #DAILYFOOD #UKFOOD #BRITISHFASTFOOD
