This Weekend, Visit Berlin's Wealthiest Art Institution 🎨✨
Yesterday, I joined a friend to check out the lively opening at HKW, and it felt incredibly grand! HKW stands for Haus Der Kulturen Der Welt, which translates to the House of World Cultures. It mainly focuses on showcasing non-European contemporary art, performances, events, and research. Being government-funded, it has quite a budget (the team consists of around a hundred people). It's located right next to the Bundestag, making it a prominent landmark in Berlin. The building was originally designed as a parliament house and officially became HKW in 1989. This year's exhibition theme at HKW is "O Quilombismo," which explores how minority groups resist colonialism and historical oppression by celebrating cultural autonomy. The works of nearly seventy artists primarily reflect the context of Pan-African civilization, along with some pieces from Latin America and Asia. Due to the large crowd, we had to queue and couldn't see the entire exhibition, but I felt that both the theoretical research and artistic creations were very grounded. This weekend, because of the opening, admission is free (afterward, it will be 8/6 euros). There are also musical performances on the rooftop after 8 PM, part of HKW's Sonic Pluriverse Festival. Yesterday, they were selling drinks and snacks on the rooftop, and there were a few stalls from Thaipark that smelled amazing... 😍 The last few photos are of the free materials I collected inside the museum, including newspapers, books, and a seed card you can plant. The highlight is a 300-page exhibition activity guide, available in both German and English, which is very detailed, with sketches for each section to help identify the artworks. It seems that if you visit later, the ticket will also include this guide. Funny enough, I saw people from other art institutions handing out flyers and newspapers at HKW yesterday, including HAU and Floating University, haha! 😂 #Berlin #BerlinLife #Museum #ContemporaryArt
