Tonchin – A Cozy Ramen Bistro Perfect for Dates 🍜💕
It’s gloomy in LA today—the city issued a storm warning, and we’re expecting heavy rain and flooding over the next three days. Typhoon weather just calls for a warm, comforting bowl of ramen! Today’s pick: Tonchin, which first opened in Tokyo in 1992. Later, the owner’s son brought it to New York, where it gained a loyal following before finally landing in LA. 🌧️🍥 Unlike other ramen spots in LA, this one has a real date-night vibe. The restaurant is tucked on the ground floor of an apartment building on Melrose. Step inside, and you’re greeted by a full bar and moody, intimate lighting. 🥂✨ The drink menu is extensive—from highballs and sake to natural wine. Beyond ramen, they also offer hand rolls, bao buns, and more. I’m totally obsessed with their cabbage and pork dumplings—served sizzling in a cast-iron pot. The staff even pours a splash of water at the table for a dramatic steam effect, topped with scallions for a homely touch. 🥟🔥 I’ll be honest—I’m no ramen expert, and it’s not usually my go-to. But my verdict? Rich flavor without being overly salty 😆! The chashu is tender but not too fatty. The real star here is actually the shaved ice! I made a special trip back one evening just for drinks and dessert. The matcha flavor stands out—intense, slightly bitter, and deeply aromatic. Highly recommend! 🍵❄️ Have you been to Tonchin?
