Two Featured Restaurants Reviewed! Cantonese Roast Meat vs. Home-Style

I’ve found two more hidden gem restaurants in Greensboro—one serves nostalgic Cantonese roast meat, and the other offers home-style Sichuan dishes that comfort Chinese taste buds. While each has minor flaws, being able to taste these flavors in a foreign country is more than satisfying~ 1. Van Loi | Cantonese Roast Meat Relieves Homesickness, Vietnamese Pho Is Mediocre 🍖 The name alone is interesting! "Van Loi" sounds like the Cantonese pronunciation of "Wan Li" () when spoken in English—it’s likely run by Cantonese-Vietnamese owners. The menu includes both Vietnamese food and Cantonese roast meat, which directly hits the craving for "roast meat"~ Cantonese Roast Meat: I’d call it the "Greensboro Roast Meat Champion"! 😭 The char siu (roast pork) has a slightly crispy outer layer; every bite is full of sweet honey flavor, and the meat is tender without being dry. The roast duck has crispy skin and juicy meat—dip it in plum sauce to cut through greasiness, and each bite carries the familiar Cantonese taste, instantly awakening homesickness. Even eating two pieces isn’t enough~ Vietnamese Pho: Compared to the roast meat, it’s rather unremarkable. The broth is slightly bland, lacking a standout fresh flavor. It still lags behind my "Pho Top Picks" (Florida first, Wisconsin second). Not recommended if you’re craving Pho, but definitely worth a visit for the roast meat! 2. Hometown Delicious | Home-Style Sichuan Dishes Satisfy Cravings, Small Portions Are a Downside 🌶️ This restaurant focuses on Northern Chinese and Sichuan cuisine, with a wide range of dishes available, but I mostly order Sichuan food—after all, being able to eat home-style Sichuan dishes overseas is already enough to move people~ Sichuan Cuisine Taste: The flavor is home-style, similar to what your mom might cook at home. It has a balance of numbing, spicy, and fresh notes, but isn’t particularly stunning—it’s the kind of taste "you could replicate at home". Dishes like Mapo Tofu and Boiled Fish have moderate seasoning, and their strength lies in "tasting authentically Chinese"—one bite can ease homesickness~ Obvious Flaw: The portions are really small! 🥺 For the same price, the portions are nearly a third less than other Chinese restaurants, making it poor value for money. It’s okay for an occasional meal if you’re too lazy to cook, but I’d rather go to an American-Chinese restaurant to buy a cheap, large portion of Scallion Beef or Sichuan Beef for a more satisfying meal~ #GreensboroNC #NCFood #CantoneseRoastMeat #SichuanCuisine #ChineseFoodInUSA
