USA｜Urban Oasis: Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel 🏙️🌴

Renowned American designer Kelly Wearstler has designed the Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel in the heart of Los Angeles. Drawing from the building’s rich historical layers and the multicultural influences of LA, she transformed it into a luxury hotel with 148 guest rooms. ✨🏨 As part of the Proper Hospitality group, Downtown L.A. Proper is situated between South Park and the Fashion District in downtown LA, offering superb views of the city skyline. 🌆 We’ve previously featured its sister property in San Francisco, also masterminded by Kelly Wearstler. Los Angeles itself is a cultural crossroads. According to Wearstler, the hotel’s interior design draws color and form from Mexican, Moroccan, Spanish, and Portuguese cultures. 🎨🪵 The spirit of desert landscapes and vibrant folk traditions from these regions is palpable throughout the space. Guests enter through the building’s original ornate archway, flanked by potted columnar cacti. A graphite-front desk by ceramist Morgan Peck converses with illustrations of Mexican flora and fauna by Abel Macias. 🏜️✍️ The original pink-and-white checkerboard floor tiles have been preserved, evoking a jungle-like texture that blends retro charm with lively visual energy. 🌸♟️ Handcrafted wooden chairs with Mexican brutalist influences harmonize with bold floral expressions, while the chandeliers—handwoven and inspired by the South of France—are framed by Wearstler’s rational, contemporary lines, balancing passion and romance. 💡✨ A grid pattern serves as the unifying element throughout. The designer cleverly uses checks and plaids from the old building, pairing them with vibrant tones to create spaces that feel both independent and connected. ◼️🟨 The hotel’s Caldo Verde restaurant and bar features custom stained glass by Judson Studios at the entrance. The existing architectural elements merge with the designer’s creativity, resulting in an eclectic style that flows throughout the dining space. 🍽️🪞 Deep brown plaids transition between the restaurant’s yellow tones and the lobby’s pink hues, striking a balance between vintage refinement and playful romance. 🟤💗 The hotel rooftop offers breathtaking views. In a city where space is precious, this concrete jungle also embraces a “wild luxury” vibe. Various ferns and cacti make the terrace feel like a chic desert escape. 🌵🌇 From vintage to custom-made, the hotel’s design includes 136 unique types of tiles.
