Voodoo Doughnut – An Eccentric Bakery with Delicious Doughnuts 🍩
Around 2003, friends Kenneth "Cat Daddy" Pogson and Tres Shannon joked about wanting to achieve "world doughnut domination," which led to the birth of a nationally famous doughnut franchise with 19 locations across seven states. Voodoo Doughnut is all about breaking boundaries — whether in doughnut creativity or in community building 🌍❤️. The franchise actively supports local charities and nonprofits, adding a sweet touch of social responsibility to every bite. I was in San Antonio for a work trip and was thrilled to finally experience Voodoo Doughnut, after missing the chance earlier this year in Portland. The downtown San Antonio bakery is a sea of pink, as eclectic and playful as you’d imagine from this Portland-born brand. Where else could you find a Longhorn and Baron Samedi (the father of the dead who leads carnival parades) staring down at you beneath a giant crystal chandelier? 😄🕯️ The staff was just as quirky and friendly, knowledgeable about all the wild creations on the menu. There’s plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for those who can’t wait to dig in — the outdoor seats are perfect for people-watching too! 🪑👀 What I ordered: 🍩 Glazed Raised – because if the OG doughnut isn’t good, nothing else matters. 🍓 Go-Tart – a Pop-Tart meets doughnut, filled with strawberry, topped with vanilla icing and popping candy sprinkles. 🥜 Chuckles – a yeasted doughnut dipped in chocolate frosting and hot cocoa powder, topped with peanuts, caramel, and chocolate drizzle. I tried my best not to order the Bacon Maple Bar (still regretting that decision 😅). Voodoo Doughnut is for the unapologetic sweet-tooth in all of us — definitely not for those watching their sugar levels! That said, I truly enjoyed all three. Surprisingly, the Go-Tart was my favorite (and I’m not even a Pop-Tarts fan!). Their coffee was excellent, too ☕👍. Is this the best doughnut in America? Not quite. But it’s absolutely one of the most fun and memorable doughnut chains out there, and I’ll never pass up a chance to visit when I’m near one! #VoodooDoughnut #DoughnutLover #SanAntonioEats #Quirkytreats #PortlandVibes #FoodieFun
