#WorldHeritageDowlatAbadGarden ๐ฟ๐๏ธ Dowlat Abad Garden is a gem of Yazd, an oasis city. Built in the mid-18th century as the residence of the Yazd governor, it was inscribed as part of the Persian Gardens on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. ๐๐ The garden features the tallest wind tower in Iran, standing over 33 meters high, with stunning stained glass windows, serving as a prelude to the Pink Mosque. ๐โจ During a visit to an art exhibition, I noticed how rare it is to see women in workplaces in Iranโmost women are seen wearing black veils on the streets. This was also my first encounter with an Iranian female artist. ๐จ๐ฉโ๐จ As a Persian garden, Dowlat Abad Garden is renowned for its exceptional wind-catching technology. ๐ฌ๏ธ๐ฟ Located in the Chahar Menar (Four Minarets) district of Yazd, this garden is not only listed as a national heritage site in Iran but also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ๐๏ธ๐ Its wind tower, standing at about 8.5 meters, is one of the tallest in the world. Due to its desert environment, Yazd boasts unique Persian architecture and is nicknamed the "City of Windcatchers." ๐๏ธ๐ฌ๏ธ The garden was built at the end of the Afsharid Dynasty (1160 AH) by Mohammad Taghi Khan Bafghi, the founder of the Khans of Yazd, who held the title of "Great Khan" (Khan being a ruler's title). ๐๐ฐ Initially, he constructed a qanat (65 kilometers long) to channel water from Mehriz to Yazd, and then to Dowlat Abad Garden. ๐ง๐ The garden spans 70,000 square meters and includes seven buildings, ponds, and fountains, all surrounded by flowers and various trees. ๐บ๐ณ The aqueduct in Dowlat Abad Garden is 200 years old and consists of five channels. ๐๐๏ธ The Dowlat Abad Pavilion is one of the most important structures, featuring a windcatcher above it. Wind enters the building and passes over the pond, creating a cool and pleasant breeze for those inside. ๐ฌ๏ธโ๏ธ The cool air moves from the base of the wind tower to the alcoves and corridors, earning the pavilion the nickname "Summer Building." ๐๏ธ The pavilion has three walls with lattice doors, a small room in the windcatcher, a front hall, and two Pastus (small storage rooms). It is octagonal in shape. ๐โจ Behesht Aeen (meaning "like paradise") faces the sunlight and serves as the family's winter residence. โ๏ธ๐ This building is located in the front hall, separating the Andaruni (private area in traditional Persian homes) from the Biruni (public area). Both sides are planted with cherry and pomegranate trees.
