World Heritage Site: The Old City of Jerusalem and Its Walls
⛰️ World Cultural Heritage Site — "Jerusalem Old City and Its Walls" Since the 10th century BCE, when King Solomon built the First Temple here, this place has been the spiritual center of Judaism. Later, Jesus was crucified here, and Muhammad ascended to heaven from here during the Night Journey. Thus, the site preserves the evolution of faith within the Abrahamic religions. 🎃 Along with the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Western Wall, the Ottoman-era city walls, and the Via Dolorosa (the path of Jesus' suffering), these landmarks together form the Old City of Jerusalem. 🎃 The Via Dolorosa (Path of Jesus' Suffering) This pilgrimage route connects the 14 stations marking the events of Jesus' crucifixion, culminating at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. ⛰️ The Eight Gates and Walking the Walls The two most important gates are: Jaffa Gate — Most tour groups enter here. There’s a visitor center, and tickets for the wall walk (9:00–21:00) are available here. This gate leads into the Christian Quarter. Damascus Gate — Located to the north, it opens directly into the Muslim Quarter and has a bus station with routes to various Palestinian cities. For example, Bus 234 to Bethlehem costs 5.5 Israeli shekels and goes to the final stop. ⛰️ Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque Open to non-Muslims only from Monday to Thursday in the mornings. Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosques but can view them from the outside. The rest of the time, even the outer areas are closed to non-Muslims. The Dome of the Rock marks the spot where Muhammad ascended through the seven heavens, which led to the establishment of the five daily prayers in Islam. 📸Western Wall (Wailing Wall) Photography is not allowed on Saturdays (the Sabbath). On other days, it is permitted. There are multiple entrances to the wall area. 📸 City of David National Park Exit through Dung Gate to reach this site, which features a nighttime light show! It is the ancient palace of King David and an important archaeological and historical site. ⛰️ Site of the Last Supper A short walk from Zion Gate brings you to this significant location. #Jerusalem #Israel #WorldHeritageSite #MiddleEast #Travel
