Bakehouse on Collins
Chinese BBQ Pork Pie $8
About time I spent some time in my hood and visit some bakeries. Always good to know what's in your backyard. Bakehouse on Collins have been around for over 15 years and have the largest vegan selection of pies and a wide selection of meat pies too so don't worry š
The presentation of the Chinese BBQ pork pie looked really nice, covered in poppy and sesame seeds. The lid had a nice golden brown look to it, wasn't that flakey, soft to bite into. The sides and base were cooked really well.
Biting into the pie I could taste a really nice spicy flavour, it wasn't too strong, it matched the bbq pork really well. Would be similar to a chinese spice i'd say. The meat was really nice and tender. The filling wasn't sloppy and held up nicely. I would have loved to know what cut of pork they used , because it was really well cooked. I reckon a bit of capsicum in it and some other chinese veggies with the pork and a spicy sauce/gravy really made the flavours marry in with each other. Even the inside of the pie looked really nice. The serving temp was spot on and the pie held up together fine. The price is at the higher end of the scale, but not the most expensive i've had. A really nice tasting pie š„§!

Mango Coconut Curry w Pumpkin and Chickpea $ 7.80
The presentation of this pie looked really good and the size - it was big, believe me.
The pastry was again really well cooked, had a nice dark golden brown look to it (the photo was taken in the sun, I can assure you it wasn't burnt) the lid had a bit of a crunch, it wasn't dry at all and had a bit of flake to the lid. The sides and base were cooked well, the base had a slight crunch to it which made an interesting texture while eating it.
The pie was packed to the brim with pumpkin and chickpeas, the mango coconut curry was more savoury i'd say, with a hint of sweetness, prob could have turned the heat up with the curry just a touch to get that zing. The gravy to veg ratio looked pretty good, the filling looked pretty decent, stable. All the flavours worked really well together and it was a pretty decent tasting pie. Serving temp was good and the pie held up together fine.
If you're into vegan pies give this place a look. It's worth it ! It's a shopfront bakery so no tables or chairs.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreAbsolutely delicious creamy tuna pies (although they can fall apart quickly so a thicker base would be nice) and the chocolate donuts are amazing. You would never know they are vegan. As a former vegan (now pescetarian) it's amazing to see the vegan and veg variety. Everyone is catered for. My partner loves the sausage rolls. But please never do those awful chocolate x buns for Easter again, or have the donuts still...

Their range of pie flavours and types are not to be missed. Crispy flakey layers of pastry are generously filled with lots of flavours and textures. Clean and well spiced. So impressed. š
