The family and i attended the bartley hotel last week as a part of a group that hosted a private function there and over all i was not overly impressed.
We were told the function didn't start until 6 pm. Upon arrival we paid $35 dollars a head for adults to attend. we had mentioned we had a child with us but could not be told as to what it would cost for her because nobody knew what the cost of kids was.
We had three options for main meals, none of which were dietary or autism/sensory friendly and there were adults that ended up ordering from the kids bistro menu because of this. There was no pre-put together kids menu or options on the set menu for children. when food orders were being taken and we mentioned this to staff working the function. we were given a normal bistro menu AFTER everyone elses order had been taken and was told to order food for kids at the bar, not long after a second staff member came back and attempted to take the kids food orders and had to be told that we had already organised the kids meals while ordering drinks at the bar.
The food came out late, it was mediocre and again staff had issues communicating whose meals were who's and making sure everyone had their meals. This also happened with dessert later in the evening.
At one point in the night my kid needed to go to the bathroom. I had taken her to the female toilets by the main dining area to discover a "please use toilets in the gaming room" sign by the door. We walked to the gaming room door and i stuck my head inside to inquire about toilets where a very rude gaming attendee who was behind the bar shouted across the room "oi, you cant be in here, it says no minors". I attempted to explain that whilst i get that, my kid needed to use the toilet to which i received the response of "well you've just walked past some". I then attempted to tell the attendant about the sign by the door only to be told "doesn't matter, you can't use these ones, just use the one behind you". We walked into the female toilets to find one stall clogged and overflowing, the smell was unbearable and another patron complaining about it to someone else who was waiting to use the bathroom.
My partner at one stage went to buy drinks at the bar and mid transaction the attendant walked away and he was left waiting for 5 minutes before anyone asked if he needed a hand.
Later that evening kiddo needed to use the bathroom again, i took her back to the bathroom we used on the first trip only to find an "out of order, use toilets in gaming room" sign on the door and it took us another 5 minutes to find a staff member that could point us in the direction of a toilet that she could use since shes a minor and cant walk through the gaming room.
Over all the experience wasn't great and if we weren't visiting during a function, i probably wouldn't bother to bring the family here again.
Whilst our experience wasn't great we did have this beautiful male server with bright red hair and black earrings that was absolutely amazing. No ask was too big or too small. He even helped clear a path for me to walk through during dinner service because he noticed my walking aid and asked if i wanted him to grab me anything. We swapped a few hospitality stories during service (because i also work in hospitality and understand the stress), we had a chuckle and he was incredibly sweet to our table the entire night. Unfortunately I didn't grab his name before we left but he was absolutely amazing! This man needs a raise. without him his kindness, understanding and patience the whole night would have been absolutely...

Course 1. Antipasto Plate was ok to good. Olives and dip nice. Limited pitta bread on platters and one roll only each was lite on. Peppers and Smoked Salmon was limited but nice.
Course 2. Seafood consisted of the smallest SA Prawns on the market which were nice but very finicky. Rationed out to 2-3 prawns each. Pickled Octopus & Squid was nice. Fried/Battered fish was poor and a big piece that I bit into was still cold/frozen in the centre. No sauces available. No seafood sauce for the prawns, no vinegar and no tartare sauce. Received some well after asking when this course was finished. Two small balls to wash your hands from peeling a few prawns is not sufficient for 8 people.
Course 3. Meat & Vege. A bit disappointing. Beef was tender and good. However, guess what .... no gravy again. Requesting gravy but by the time the gravy arrived the meal was done. The ham was a roast honey shoulder which was disappointing. Almost ham steak quality. The turkey - we think it was ... was avarage. Guess what ... No cranberry sauce. Fried chicken was nice but didn't really suit a Christmas menu imo. Carrots & Potatoes were nice. I didn't try the Brocholi as it was served crushed under the meats. A strange way to serve vegetables though.
Course 4. Desert ok. Fruit platter was clean with orange, watermelon and strawberry's. Platter of with 1 mouse filled mini cakes 6 for a table of 8. 6x Mini mini Christmas puddings for table of 8. Dozen cold fruit pies. Plain Meranges with a single serve of custard and single serve of cream for 8 people.
Overall there was plenty of food and we thank the Staff for doing the best to make a nice day. The staff were nice and we did bag numerous left overs for our pets.
Below is a summary of the bits that missed the mark.
Understaffed - needed extra people on hand Medium/Average quality cuts - buy a few 9kg Hams and have some nice cold cuts instead of boiled shoulder. Buy Large SA Prawns from IGA @ $24kg. Get some decent turkey. Cherry's on Christmas - got to a Hills Producer and buy some in bulk @ $9kg. Ditch the fish/fried foods on Christmas Day. SAUCE - Seafood, Tartare, Cranberry, Gravy, Custard and Cream are all staples of a Christmas meal. Plates - Eating each course from the same plates wasn't great. However it is manageable ... however eating deserts from a prawn juice, beef juiced plate is not. Did I mentioned understaffed - extra staff needed to simply clean the table away regularly and supply the required requests whether it is 'can we have side plates for the cakes' or 'can we have some gravy please' etc. All this is difficult to request or for staff to do when there is limited staff on hand
The meal for a pub banquet would have been ok. Probably with a price range 2/3 rds of what we paid. Especially since the limited staff are not on time and a half or better (that's a disgrace in itself). We have been to a number of similar Christmas Lunches of the same price range including The Crown in Victor and The Arkaba with both being a far superior experience based on the quality of food alone.
I have written this review without predjudice hoping that The Bartley Hotel will lift the quality of its Christmas Day Menu in the future. Sadly it's the first paid restaurant Christmas Day Lunch where I for one did not stuff my face until I felt like busting and our family left before closing which was a first. The sentiment around the table...
ย ย ย Read moreI had my 60th Birthday party at The Bartley Hotel on the weekend for 47 people in one of their function rooms. I don't know where to start except to say that they were exceptional in every way. The food was absolutely delicious and generous serves both in the entrees and the main courses. The drinks were very reasonably priced and the service by Maddi who was our waitress on the day was incredible. She worked tirelessly all afternoon to make sure my guests were well looked after. Nothing was too much trouble and she was fantastic. Thank you Maddi for making my day so wonderful. Every single one of my 47 guests loved the food, service and ambiance and all of them have said they will definitely be going back to the Bartley Hotel for a meal in the near future. The total bill for the function was extremely reasonable considering my guests had lots of food and lots to drink. I can't speak highly enough of this place. I would give it 100 stars if I could instead of just 5. They deserve it. Do yourself a favour and if you want a function that you and your guests will love, both in food, service and ambiance you would be crazy to go past the Bartley Hotel or if you just want a delicious meal with the family at a reasonable price and great service go the The Bartley. You will not be disappointed....
