Sandman Bakery @ Bawley — Restaurant in Bawley Point

Nothing stokes genuine hunger more than a long surf and I arrived at Samdman Bakery Bawley Point, 25 mins south of Ulladulla, utterly ravenous after 2 hours in clean green/blue peaks at nearby surf break Sandmines, which was showing classic form. Owner Dave and his wife have been tag teaming 12 hour shifts, with the bakery operating near 24/7 to bake enough Bread, Rolls, Pies and Rats Coffins to deal with the relentless holiday crowds. The combination of an early Easter, balmy ocean temps, warm (not hot) days that are clear and windless have meant the lizard like March of holiday makers from Canberra and Sydney has been nothing short of astonishing; and the relatively meagre resources of this coastal hamlet are beyond stretched. “Busier than any Christmas or Easter I can remember” Dave guffaws. “The Mrs and I are going 24 hours a day!” They’ve got a good attitude to it all and assist my kids in picking out some lunch items. The pies are great. Presented in foil trays they are tall. Thick chunks of beef in a perfect gravy ratio and a good combo of crunchy and soft pastry. Dave clearly knows how to make a good dogs eyes. “All I ever hear about is Hayden’s but I reckon we’ve got ‘em covered” Dave winks as he rings us up and we leave the shop. Minor quibbles are that the pepper pie could have a bit more kick and the structural integrity struggled at about the 70% mark such was the bulk of the pies delicious innards, but those are as I say, quibbles. Absolutely...

My brother and I had a house window delivery in the truck this morning in the suburb behind the bakery, afterwards we stopped by for a bite to eat. Welcomed by the lovely, chatty and happy lady who was working by herself. Presented with some amazing. colourful and super tasty looking treats behind the window to browse at. I personally (finally after chatting away) ordered a Cheese and Bacon Pie and an Apple Turn Over to go. I have been a large pie fan, but have never come across anything half decent for a long time until today! This pie absolutely blew it out of the park for me, for one the cheese inside the pie covered the whole top circumference. The cheese gave off a really nice rich taste combined with the beautiful meat and crispy bacon pieces on top. The pies are huge and a real truckie size. I am soon to have the apple turnover, but I was too excited to give you guys some lovely feedback.

Best apple pies you will ever eat. We buy a family size pie every time we go to Bawley Point. Heavy and chunky pieces of apple with light crispy pastry. Fabulous cream buns and lamingtons as well. Can’t rate it...
