Disappointing. Haven't been there since Ma Rings day and was looking forward to lunch and a drink. Place needs a good clean for starters. Outdoor area is looking very shabby, dead plants in pots and a garbage bin to collect the water leaking through the roof on display. Dirty plastic awnings and tables just laying we're they were last used.
Flies were dreadful and made trying to eat difficult. The indoor dining area was also well in need of an update.
Menu was extensive but for the tired venue it was expensive. No salt and pepper shakers, just little paper packets.
My steak burger took about 45 minutes to arrive and this was a Tuesday lunchtime. It wasn't very busy. My husbands meal hadn't arrived by the time I had finished my meal and when he went to enquiry was told that the chef 'would start it straight away' I couldn't understand why the two orders were not prepared at the same time but when his 'pork roll with onions and gravy' finally arrived the chef did apologise and said that he didn't notice the two meals on the order as it was written too close to the top of the docket!
The amount of flies buzzing around make it difficult to eat but there was just no nice option of a place to eat at this hotel.
This is a shame as its a historic hotel with a great past and deserves to be treated with respect and bought up to a general standard of cleanliness and facilities..
The Brunswick Heads hotel is a much better choice if you are wanting to have a meal in the general area. It's a...
Read moreThe Billinudgel Hotel is a quaint dinner location if you are in the area. The Hotel itself is an icon. Originally built in 1893, this pub has seen it all I’m sure.
The spirit of Ma Ring, who ran the pub for 53 years and who by the time she was 101, was Australia’s oldest licensee, still lingers, and some paintings and pictures of her hang proudly on the walls.
There is no pretension here, just good cold beer, and a good feed at a good price, and it feels like people from all walks of life are welcome here.
The special on the night we visited was the Chicken Schnitzel, and each purchase came with a free beer ticket. My son isn’t old enough to enjoy the beer, but views a Schnitzel as a giant, awesome value Chicken Nugget. He loved the Schnitzel and the gravy that was on the side. I went with the slightly fancier Parmagiana. Another guest with us ordered the vegetarian curry, and said it was great and ate it all, so a good review all around.
The tomato sauce was good, the ham was good and there was a good amount of cheese on the parmy without it being gross. Everyone cleaned their plates so well the dish-pig had an easy job with them I am sure.
Sitting outside on a warm night is great, there was a bit of wind the night we went, so we sat on the verandah. The whole establishment has a history and a rustic charm that I hope it never loses.
I purchased a hoodie as a parting gift for myself to have as a souvenir - not every Parmy has that effect on me, so take that as further...
Read moreGreat staff, great food & great accommodation for the price.
All staff from young to old were very friendly & helpful in all encounters I had with them, a rarity these days.
Had a chicken parmigiana for dinner & garlic bread. The kitchen were more than happy to throw cheese ontop of the garlic bread as requested which was delicious.
The parmi was on the higher side of current parmi prices ($30) BUT well worth it considering the serving size & quality. Definitely one of the top parmi’s I’ve had from a pub in years. There was heaps of chicken, and it was the real stuff. The crumb was not too heavy nor oil, cooked nice n crisp, similar to schnitz. The chips were also epic.
For the price the accomodation was great. The single beds advertised must’ve been long single and could easily accomodate me as a 6’ 4” bloke.
The amenities for the accommodation were in great nick. The only thing I’d love to see for the amenities is towel and clothes hooks. There wasn’t really anywhere to put clothing and towels other than on the sink or on the floor.
Overall, very well priced for the experience provided. Can’t stop thinking about...
