Otway Artisan Gluten Free — Restaurant in Birregurra

If you have wheat intolerance or you are coeliac, Otway Artisan is perhaps the only bakery cafe in Australia where you are the main event - in fact everything here is gluten free. No, you don’t have to suffer that one choice of an overly sugared oily friand that is the sole option for a coeliac at most cafes. Here, you can eat the entire menu and it is incredibly delicious. Do you miss being able to have a baguette? Well, here you can return to the fold and savour one of life’s simplest pleasures - fresh baked bread filled with perfect ingredients balanced with herbs and other deliciousness. Swished down with Otway chai, T2 or Kazbah Coffee Roasters and finished off with a pistachio and lemon cake. Oh, and I forgot to mention that It’s in the old bank building of Birregurra - one of the sweetest little Western District hamlets on the road to the lakes and craters region. Old gardens, black cows in the paddock, church bells...

The food was good however, this place needs some serious customer service and communication improvements. Ordered a sandwich that was already made up and a cake to take away. They took them away and I waited for 20mins for what seems like no reason...it didnt appear to be remade and toasting can't surely take 20mins? To make it worse, no one communicated what was going on at all. The vibe in there was very weird and although the place was dead quiet, most of the tables were dirty and left with cups and plates everywhere and the staff still were wandering around acting like there was nothing to do. Another customer actually cleaned up the tables for the staff so he could sit with his family. Overall, bad customer service and communication. Not worth the wait or the price,...

We had a delicious breakfast and coffee here this morning. It’s such a delight to find an amazing gluten free panini - I haven’t been able to find one in years since becoming gluten intolerant. We received very friendly service and one of the best coffees I’ve had in ages. I loved the chicken pesto panini ($15) and my partner loved the salami panini ($15).
