Initially who appeared to be the owner came off pleasant and competent, discussing meals with my family and I to order and accommodating my vegan sister well, but once the food was served my problems began. I was told initially they only had very few small slices of sour dough left, and they offered to substitute full sized fruit bread sour dough, but I declined as I loathe the texture of fruit bread in savoury meals. When my meal came, I understand the bread was small, but the portion size was near non-existent of the topping (guac, salsa and corn and potato fritter). I was given beans and toast to make up for some of the size, but I gave it to my family as I had told the manager while we were discussing food initially I dislike beans. My two family members who ordered the same on fruit bread got 2-3x more than me, to which the owner told me she had just given them extra large serves, and gave one a third egg because it was made spare in case one fell apart. Why the decision was made to add it to the largest meal is beyond me. I will clarify I don't eat nor expect particularly huge portions, but the amount of food on two of the three bread slices (third was left bare) could fit in the space of my circled forefinger and thumb on each. The bread was rather badly burnt, and the third was near inedibly so, to the point the carbon taste totally overwhelmed it, and what pushed me to the point of sharing this experience instead of giving them benefit of the doubt it was just a bad day was the owner's reply. They flat out told me the bread was not burnt, firmly, even after I insisted. They waived the cost of my meal from our bill, in their favour, but I cannot overlook the attitude of being directly told my bread was not burnt after it ruined what little meal I was served. I was quite unimpressed by the behaviour of the other staff while I waited, but it was near the end of a long and busy day so I won't begrudge them that. In essence, waited forty five minutes to be told my food wasn't burnt and I was wrong. Props to accommodating my vegan sister so well but I will not return. The iced latte...
Read moreRecently went here for a Friday evening meal. The service was friendly, but that didn't make for everything else. The Cured Mackarel with Cucumber was a main meal but was less than entree size - about 10 slices of cucumber and the amount of Mackeral was about the volume of a quarter of a mobile phone. This chef is concerned about how good things taste but has forgotten that the purpose of a meal is to also feed his customers. The sides came after our group of 5 had eaten our main course. The cafe encourages people to share meal but when we asked for servicing utensils the staff didn't know what we meant. We were given some bread, after we had finished our main course and sides, apparently as compensation for the small size of the meal, but we were given 4 slices of bread for a table of 5 people - how penny pinching and parsimonious can you get? Finally, this was a cold winter night, but I had to wear my puffer jacket inside because the front door has to be partially open to allow ventilation through the kitchen, so I got a chilly breeze on the side of my...
Read moreThis is my favourite little Canberra coffee shop, right across from my house and owned by the loveliest young couple, Bridget and José. Their staff are amazing, always going above and beyond to make sure all customers feel welcomed and looked after. With José in the kitchen, the food is just to die for. His South American heritage shows through in the flavours of multiple dishes like Carnitas Tacos with beef brisket, capsicum salsa, mixed herbs and pickled onions; Or the Spiced Black Bean Stew with poached egg, chimichurri, corn chips and parmesan. Plus breakfast favourites, fresh pastries, toasted sandwiches and fantastic coffee from local roaster RedBrick. I can’t recommend this place enough. I bring my little girl here practically every day for my coffee fix and often a snack for her. It’s my go to for brunch or lunch with friends and family. You should definitely make the trip out to Kambah to check it out...
