Bush Bakehouse Cafe at Hyden Visited on 21/5/2022, 22/5/2022

We read some good reviews about this bakery, and decided to have buy some bakery stuff like pastries or cake for the next day breakfast. When we drove pass the local shops in Hyden, all of them were already closed for the day.

On Sunday, after visited the Wave Rock and Hippo Yawn, we try our luck to drop in for late morning tea.

It is open. A notice for sale if business is pisted on both the front and rear entrance doors. Not that I am interested in buying the business, I am keen to find out Bush Bakehouse Cafe story.

I manage to talk with the wife of this husband and wife team business. She is very friendly and narrates her story. She developed an interest an interest in baking while she was back in South Australia. After her marriage and moved to Western Australia, and later to Hyden, they opened a bakery. More than decade later, it is time to enjoy retirement.

I cannot compare their products with the real Danish or French pastries and croissants, neither can I do likewise the Vanilla slice with proper zabaglione filling. They are very Australian. There are cream-fill eclairs, pies, cup cakes, etc.

The dining area is clean, but many people are still shy away from the pandemic. It is a matter time the business will return as more and more tourists head towards Wave Rock. We have our coffee, eclairs, Vanilla slice, and a pastry before we return...

After visiting Wave Rock and heading back to Kondinin, decided to stop off at the Bakery for lunch. For a small town and an equally smallish bakery, it was pretty busy. The food looked great, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food.

There is a great selection of pies and sausage rolls, as well as cakes and sandwiches to satisfy your hunger. Coffee and tea is also available, they could even do me a lactose free chai! 😊

Staff were super friendly too. The lady explained to me, when I couldn’t decide on which pie to have, that they turn them over regularly and are cooking constantly through the day to keep up. I settled for a sausage roll and a pepper steak pie. It was a bit heavy on the pepper, but I like it like that. However, if it’s not for you, maybe choose one of the other varieties.

I really recommend dropping in and supporting local plus get a tasty feed at...

I have given 5 stars based on the 1 item I ordered from here, the only item I ever order upon entering a new Bakery.... The almighty Steak, Bacon and Cheese pie. I have travelled far and wide of this country, visited a lot of bakeries and eaten a lot of pies and to my surprise, this, so far was the 2nd best Steak, Bacon and Cheese pie I've had. The first was a bakery in Aratula, QLD. But this pie from Bush Bakehouse Cafe was delicious!! REAL chunks of beef with a thick rich gravy on the inside coupled with REAL Bacon and Cheese melted on the outside. Housing this phenomenal filling is a pastry that doesn't fall apart upon the first mouth watering bite. It was the perfect amount of flakiness without being soggy. Definitely a memorable pie. Thankyou from the bottom...

I read many reviews about the friendly service here but they've either changed the staff or I went on an off day. We were spoken to by two different staff members, on two separate occasions, both were very abrupt. Fortunately, we found it quite entertaining in a Fawlty Towers kind of way (UK visitors will definitely understand this). The people behind us actually got shouted at for not reading (or obeying) the 4 person rule. They swiftly retreated. The food was OK but, apart from the entertainment value, the service could be a lot more personable and friendly.
