New owners - same great location. Japanese cafe offering breakfast and lunch, soon to offer dinner on weekends. The owners used to be a part of the very popular japanese cafe ‘Federal Dona Cafe’ - so you know to expect great things! Had a fantastic coffee here this morning, first time since the new owners have taken over and we were incredibly impressed. We had oat cappuccinos, and it was one of the best coffees i’ve had. They offer many milk alternatives as well. They had freshly baked GF raspberry white choc macadamia muffins and GF banana pecan muffins on offer too. Breakfast menu includes a range of breakfast burgers with vegetarian and GF options, as well as a big breakfast and classic toast with eggs and sides. Lunch menu consists of a range of sushi options including tempura pumpkin and sweet potato, fish, avo cucumber, chicken karaage and a few others. Miso soup and brown rice option too. I heard mention of a Japanese burger lunch menu too, with teriyaki or karaage chicken as one option amongst others. They said they are working up to offering Friday and Sat night dinners in the next little while. Chez Basho Boatshed Cafe offers something different and special to Iluka’s limited range of eating options. Check this place out and enjoy the delicious Japanese fusion food and support new and unique small businesses!

*2023 re-review* - reviewing my rating down unfortunately. The slow service speed also applies when you're the only customer, old mate gins around in the kitchen and took 25 minutes for a bacon and egg roll with no other orders in the queue. The food is still top notch. The young barista knocks out awesome coffee. The older women taking and serving orders are forgetful at best and the larger lady places her hand on the food when serving to your table. Absolute marvel of a hidden gem here. You will wait for your food (very small kitchen) but it's absolutely worth it. A Japanese couple are running the kitchen and it shows in the food quality and presentation. Even the chicken in the sushi was freshly grilled to order in front of me. The Break Fast burger had no prep work prior - the tomato was sliced and lettuce cleaned à la minute. The bacon and egg roll was highly recommended by others but I had the Break Fast burger (twice) - the korroke on it was astounding, and the brown onion sauce tied everything in. I had teriyaki chicken for lunch with arguably the best tare I've ever experienced. The sushi was made with care and a wonderful flavour balance. The wait time is unavoidable in such a small kitchen, but do yourself a favour and allow the time - this is one of the best food experiences I've encountered lately.

First let's get the important bit said: Make a reservation to avoid disappointment! We hiked along the beach, up to the lookout and back today so agreed to spoil ourselves with a nice meal. A quick Google Maps search turned up this place and we did another walk across town to get there. As we were approaching, a group of four asked if we had a reservation. We said no as it was spur of the moment and they told us it was fully booked. We went and checked anyway and we're super lucky to get a table for 2 but we would need to leave at 7 due to some reservations arriving. Our meals were fantastic. We had a burger and sashimi plate, brownie, a couple of beers and glasses of wine and it all came to $112AUD. The place was rocking and the staff were super busy but seemed to stay on top of everything. The kitchen is adjacent to the dining area which adds to the nice vibe. There was a beautiful sunset as we were eating. Only downside was if you don't like heat it can get a bit warm from the sun. We had to finish our drinks outside as the reservations showed up at 7 as we were told. No big deal and we would highly recommend this place.
