We recently visited the Sassafras Cafe in Mount Dandenong for breakfast on a Saturday morning during our trip to the Dandenong Ranges. It was a delightful experience that left me impressed with the simple yet inviting atmosphere, delicious food, and the warm hospitality of the sweet couple who run the cafe. It's a simple cafe where you can walk in and enjoy a homely brunch without any hassle. The menu offers a variety of tasty options, and I was pleased with the quality of the food. The cafe has an open kitchen, which I found quite appealing. Additionally, the availability of outdoor seating was a bonus, especially during the summer months when you can enjoy the pleasant weather while savouring your meal. The food at Sassafras Cafe had a homely touch, and I loved it. I ordered the French toast with bacon and maple syrup, and it was absolutely delicious. My partner had the eggs Benny, and the poached eggs were perfectly cooked. Apart from the scrumptious food, what impressed me was the cozy atmosphere of the cafe. It felt like a home away from home, with a welcoming ambiance that made me feel comfortable and relaxed. I also appreciated that the prices were reasonable. The coffee served was of good quality and complemented the meal nicely. Overall, my experience at the Sassafras Cafe was memorable and highly recommend this cafe to anyone looking for a charming and inviting place to enjoy a delicious meal in Mount Dandenong.

Stopped by this small town around 2 PM, looking for a light meal and some coffee. The café had a nice atmosphere, with red wooden windows offering a relaxing view of the street. However, perhaps due to being too busy earlier, the staff seemed overwhelmed. There were breadcrumbs on the tablecloth, and empty tables still had uncollected dishes. We waited quite a while before being shown to a table. We ordered the Sassy Burger made with Angus beef, a club sandwich with chicken fillet and bacon, Hungarian salami focaccia, and a large portion of chips. The flavors and ingredients were well-matched, especially the salami focaccia, which was complemented by pesto and dried tomatoes. The combination added a fresh touch that balanced the saltiness of the salami. While the “large” chips felt more like a medium portion, the rest of the food came in reasonable sizes. If the service had been more attentive, it would have made for a much better experience.

After hiking for over an hour, my brothers and I came in yesterday to get some food. We were absolutely delighted with the food and service which we received. All the staff including the chef were all so kind to us. The food was absolutely delicious and very well priced for how much we received. The toasties were delicious as well as the soup and the salmon on toast. The chips were perfectly salted and had such a nice flavour, honestly, I think they might be the best chips I’ve ever had. It was so nice paying for our food after the chef greeted us with a big smile and was so thankful and kind to us. Thank you for demonstrating such incredible customer service and for providing with us with such delicious food. We will certainly be coming back soon. A+ service!!!!

Terrible experience and service. Won’t ever be coming back again. Walked in with my husband and baby at 1:30 and were seated. No one came to take our order, we waited for about 20 minutes. We didn’t want to wait any longer to place the order so my Husband went up to the till to order soup & scones. The scones came out after a while. At this point we had almost been waiting an hour. I asked the waitress about the soup and she went and checked and told me they had “lost my ticket” and that the soup was coming in 5 minutes. 5 minutes came and went and then my baby was getting restless and we needed to head home (it had been almost 1h30m since ordering now). I went up to the till and tried to get a refund for the soup so I could just leave, but they assured me no it’s coming right now. I didn’t want to make a fuss because I’m not normally confrontational, so even though I wanted to leave, I sat back down. Another 10 minute wait and it arrived, the waitress also brought some chips - I figured they were complimentary because of the almost 2 hour wait. Then another worker who I assume was the owner came up to me and said “you didn’t order chips!”, like it’s my fault!? I thought they were complimentary because of the wait. But the waitress had brought us someone else’s chips. I thought it was really rude and embarrassing to accuse us like that. The soup wasn’t worth the wait and we just left. Terrible experience that pretty much ruined my afternoon with my family. This was my first time coming here after the new owners took over and it’s going to...

The 5 stars are for how a group of young people managed a madhouse during Kings Birthday holiday.

I’ve been coming to this cafe since Rod was the owner, years and years, but today, though it’s not the first time I’ve been here since it’s new ownership, it’s still a repeat of it feeling chaotic.

My eyes were stinging from there being no ventilation in the kitchen, it’s too cramped, and strangers are eating in your lap. There’s too many people coming in and out, it’s a revolving door, period, not the enjoyable or relaxing atmosphere it used to be, but today was another level of chaos.

These young people however, they’re impressive. Professional, mature, patient, very kind, while the customers can be overbearing, demanding, and unreasonable. The experience was one star but the staff here are 5 staff, well done to a very incredible group of young people, a special mention to the chef managing all orders alone, the barista managing all the drinks orders while corralling the out of control crowds and the lovely wait staff who were both so polite whilst under so...
