Beresfield Tavern — Restaurant in Newcastle-Maitland

On the drive back thought to give this joint a try. Wasn't sure if located within a club so called up to suss out if wearing thongs was ok. Asked about the lunch specials. Sounded all good. Took the detour there. Thinking lunch typically is at 1130. We get there, it was a run down pub. Predominantly used as a bottle shop. No greeting, no advising oh we're not opened. Few stares- that i can interpret as disgust. As if we were aliens. Clearly we're not locals to the town. Classic pub menu done right. Was staying in Thornton on work trip and thought we would give the local a go. From the car park the Tavern entrance is to the left side, the centre entrance is to the bottleo. The Tavern is very small, the bistro was a little larger and out the back. It certainly wasn't pretty and may have you second guessing if you should stay or leave. We stayed and didn't regret it. Servings were a good size and tasted fantastic and had that home made taste and feeling that you don't normally get. We found the staff and service was friendly. New to the area, thought I would check out the local watering hole and grab a bite to eat. I felt uncomfortable and unwelcome, the second I walked in. The person I was with felt the need to justify why we were there and then asked if the kitchen was still open. Kitchen was nearly closed, so there was not much to choose from (our fault) and the food was nice. Menu not vegetarian friendly. Every salad had meat in it.
