My partner and I have been flying in regularly from the Gold Coast/Northern Rivers for years to stay at the Barkly and it's sister pub the Overlander to play music. We have seen lots of people come and go but also plenty who have stayed. After reading the reviews on this pub, I was urged to tell anyone who's reading this myself that other reviews have been highly critical and this needs fixing. Yes the pub is old. Blind Freddy can even see that! What we're you expecting in the desert? A palace ? This is a mining town, far removed from glitz and glamour ! The staff are LOVELY and anyone who says otherwise must be horrible. The manager can't do enough for you and she works her arse off maintaining that entire premises. Just last Sunday we spotted her cleaning the inground pool herself and it's a big pool that regularly cops dust storms so to have it blue and spotless certainly screams effort to me ! The kitchen staff have slightly changed over the years but you will still spot familiar faces.. they have two new chefs and their steaks are outstanding. Real veges, real mashed potatoes and really hot. The rooms regularly frequented by stayover miners and are old but are cleaned daily by a team of women who are always friendly and ready to cater to your needs. Every step is taken to ensure you have clean kitchenware and cutlery which you will find inside the microwave. The air con works.. there are powerboards, extension cords which you won't find in plenty of other places and ample seating. The showers have stainless steel floors ( this prevents spreading of any infections as germs cannot live on stainless steel) find that elsewhere ??? The beds are extremely comfortable and the linen is always perfect. If you stay across the road from one of Australia's largest mines then you should expect some noise but we are light sleepers and the noise doesn't bother us! The walls are brick and concrete. There are road trains that come through on this highway.. hence it being called a highway - duh! No surprises there... We stay in alot of places all over Australia and for the price of this accommodation as a budget motel, its up there with the best.

Read moreThe rooms are ok and beds are very comfy. Modern touch can’t complain BUT rooms are very small (some of them) and appliances are not available as advertised. Couldn’t use room service to order food cause had no QR code like the other rooms. Managed to order from my mates room. The steaks are chewing and over cooked and were delivered without cutlery. Had to get some myself and for takeaway they gave me plastic / wood ones. Impossible to cut a steak with them and if steak is chewy and over cooked forget it! Now worst thing that happened though was me coming home at around 2am from 10h nightshift and my keycard was deactivated!!! Couldn’t get into my room being super tired and just wanted to sleep. Couldn’t find anything at that time of the night anywhere else obviously! No 24h number and reception obviously closed! Worst night ever, had to sleep outside on the floor no joke!! Next day I went to reception and they said “sorry we changed your room”. Yeah great thanks for letting me know and just deactivating my room key!...
Read moreI don’t have an experience to share about the rooms or the room service. I wanted to come on here and give a shout out to the chef and kitchen stuff who served the best steak I have had in town! In a very long time! Like probably 2-3 years! The steak was divine and cooked to a perfect medium rare! My husband had the lamb shank and oh my goodness he absolutely loved it! The flavours blend so well with each other and it’s safe to say we have found our new spot as a family. Not only that but my son got the kids lamb cutlet and in town my son has not had any good experiences with red meat on the kids menus. Soooo glad he got a lovely tender lamb cutlet with chips! It says a lot when my son is able to finish a kids meal same with me and my husband. It’s rare for us to enjoy every part of our orders. We cleaned all our plates of...
