Mayi Café and Restaurant is a fantastic spot to relax and refuel after exploring Mossman Gorge, and I had the chance to visit during a university trip to the Cultural Centre in November 2024. It was the perfect way to end a day immersed in the beauty and stories of the Daintree.
Our group enjoyed a pre ordered lunch, which the friendly and welcoming staff brought out to us with ease. The team was incredibly hospitable throughout. The only minor confusion came when I went to order a drink as I hadn’t realised there was a fridge in the corner where you can grab a drink and then pay at the counter. Which was totally on me.
For my meal, I ordered a burger with chips, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was juicy, full of flavour, and the sauce tied everything together beautifully. I also had the chance to try crocodile for the first time, and I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed it! The meat was slightly firm, but the flavours they used in cooking really brought it to life. As someone who’s usually a picky eater, I didn’t expect to love it but I did!
What makes Mayi Café even more special is its design. The space blends indoor and outdoor elements beautifully, with a lovely balcony area for dining. It feels connected to the landscape around it, while still offering a comfortable and casual setting to unwind. The menu includes a great selection of drinks, snacks, and meals to suit a range of tastes, and the fresh food really hits the spot after a big day out.
There are clean, accessible toilets nearby if you need to freshen up, and the whole café is well set up for visitors to the gorge. If you’re visiting Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre or just in the area for a swim, make sure to stop by Mayi Café. It’s the perfect spot for a satisfying meal and if you’re feeling adventurous, I highly recommend giving the...
Read moreDisappointing exchange with the Cafe Manager. We had ordered a coffee, sausage roll, their famous damper and hot chips but me eating a roll I had brought from home for my young children 5yrs and 1yrs (son is anaphylactic) drew a stern glare from the Manager, who promptly advised us that they would be fined if any outside food or drinks were consumed. Acceptable for kids, not for adults - completely agree. However, I was not rolling out a three course meal prepared from home and using up tables without purchasing anything from the cafe. Further, for the Manager to ask us whether we had a receipt as our chips order was accidentally missed by the trainee staff was poor form (mistake was acknowledged but no apology offered). This review does not reflect any of the general cafe staff, but singularly, the Cafe Manager. Chips arrived, we paid our...
Read moreWe were here a little later in the day and decided to eat here rather than find somewhere back towards town.
Great choice! Lovely service with a friendly smile and the food was great.
My wife had the salt and pepper calamari and I had a crocodile curry pie and the spring rolls.
One of the best curry pies I've had in ages. Nice flavour with mild spice and definitely had that homemade feel too it!!
Not many pie options left (we didn't get here until 2pm)
Great too that the Cafe and Mossman Gorge Centre are supporting the Indigenous Australian community by providing them with training...
