What to say about the Sevenhil Hotel. It's really a bit of a mixed bag. I'll start with the good. The staff are really professional, curteous and just good. The venue itself is really lovely and I really love their underground dining area. The food and drinks are reasonably priced especially for its location in the middle of a tourist area. Now for the not so great. We arrived as a group of 6 for lunch. The place was busy yet not full. Yet our food took slightly under 1 hour to arrive at the table from time of ordering. From there it was downhill. Three of us ordered the salt and pepper calamari, the cooking itself was adaquate having only a slight powdery consistency but not too bad, however it was like the chef got the pepper and salt mixed up as the only thing you could taste was salt. It was overwhelming. One of us had the chicken schnitzel with mushroom gravy. Again, oh dear the gravy was so oversalted it was crazy, the chicken, even without the gravy tasted like it had been drowned in a vat of salty water before it was cooked, to top it off it was a tad over cooked and as a result was quite dry. I had the burger, usually a safe choice anywhere.... But not here. The beef patty was overcooked, chewy and burnt on each side. The rest of the burger was perfect so it was a real pity. Finally the battered flathead was, you guessed it. Salty, really salty. Each of the meals came with chips which were cooked perfectly and were crunchy, just perfect except for... Again, salty, salty, salty. I believe that it would normally be a great place to eat however something went wrong there today and my group paid the price hence the...
Read moreIt’s was a warm summer night, the sun had just set over the valley. However like hand crafted clay bowl that had been roasting in the sun all day, the residual heat slowly dissipated; emitting the aroma of the bushland. On the horizon my passenger and I saw the familia sign, a place we could stop in; get the lay of the land. We had spend the prior four days tracking a man by the name of smithy, no easy task.
Smithy had skipped town, after spending money he did not have. Multiple trucks filled of exotic fruit was his poison, the sorbet trade has claimed many young entrepreneur but smithy was just the lasted casualty. We place our order, nothing we had not ordered one hundred times before all over the burnt landscape our sort travel. Schnitty, schnitzel, beef parmo, whatever you call it; I’ve eaten it.
Mid conversation I stopped, it had arrived and for the first time in a long time I was breathless. I was checking on my own spittle, the smell wafting for the other tables had caused me to salivate with out noticing. If I was not distracted excusing myself to the other patrons I would have apologised to my wing man; whitey.
Whitey was a man of few words but many skills needed to survive in sovereign boulders, that he was not native to. If I could marry any man of my choosing, he would not be one. If you need someone to watch your back, twenty four hours a day for weeks with out sleep. He’s the right psychopath.
Long story...
Read moreI am disappointed to say the least with the service & meal quality/quantity I received. Went this pub with high expectations given we'd heard being the very first winery in the area. It's a pity as it spoilt our whole evening. I'm usually not one for writing reviews but on this occasion with the way we were treated felt the need for hopefully improvement in this establishment. Greeted at bar for our first drink by a barmaid who basically showed she wished she was was somewhere else .( No people skills what so ever) So ordered a local beer craft beer which I nearly choked when told it was $12.50. They don't even charge that at the footy! Anyway thought we'd try one of the local Rieslings. We decided we buy a bottle. When asked was it possible to taste prior to buying the 2 Barmaids had no idea with the licencee hearing & saying we don't do tasting here. Funny for hotel that is connected to a winery. They couldnt even work what price to sell it for which was suppose to be $27.00 but once again licencee hearing said $44.00. By this stage didn't think it could get any worse but meals were cold & not consistent. Group who'd ordered wine by the glass received different volumes. Overall I found the attitude of the staff & Licencee dismal & even when I asked about courtesy bus he threw his hands in the air giving me the impression he was to busy attending to waiter duties. Not impressed at all so went to local bottle shop &...
