On my search for Australia’s best pie, I stopped at the Tailem Bend Bakery, conveniently located just off the Princes Highway on Railway Terrace. The bakery is large, clean, and inviting, with cafe-style seating that offers a comfortable spot to enjoy a bite.

The display included a solid selection of breads, cakes, baked goods, and fresh sandwiches — both ready-to-go and made to order. However, arriving around 2pm meant slim pickings from the pie warmer, which only had plain beef pies and sausage rolls remaining.

Staff were friendly and welcoming, which added to the overall pleasant atmosphere. I grabbed a plain beef pie and a sausage roll. The sausage roll was just okay — it had a lot of cereal filler and a dominant onion flavour that overwhelmed the meat. Not terrible, but not a standout either.

The beef pie was generously filled with mince but lacked seasoning, and the gritty texture of the filling was a letdown. Interestingly, the pastry on both items was quite good — flaky and well-baked — but unfortunately, the fillings didn’t measure up.

Overall, a friendly spot with potential, but the pie didn’t quite hit the mark...

Saturday 03 Aug 24 at 12:32 hrs - Just walked out as the line (of 7 customers) grew to the cash register with only 1 person serving, the remaining staff (possibly 4) quickly and noisily packed chairs onto tables signaling that the bakery was closing down well before it’s posted closing time.

The loud clatter from the chairs being roughly stacked and the blank looks from those staff made it quite apparent we were to leave and leave quite a few of us did.

It is now 12:49 hrs, and I am still watching cars pull up with customers walking in and after a short pause coming back out and with a furtive look up and down the street get back into their cars and drive off.

It’s SATURDAY there are people everywhere and the posted closing time for the bakery is 13:00 hrs which is just 30 minutes after most people/travellers lunch break begins.

We are retired and have been travelling around Australia for 5 years and this is the rudest service we have witnessed, well done Tailem Bend Bakery.

This is our first ever poor review of any establishment and is worth reposting in the 3 FB Travelling Groups...

Supposed to be $1 donuts for kids in school uniform after school, I expected to pay $4-$5 for 1 and figured the second donut was going to cost $1 considering my daughter was right in front of them wearing school uniform, apparently the after school deal isn’t for every child and must only be a select few, 2 donuts was gonna cost $10 but my missus only had $7 on her at the time cause we didn’t consider that we were about to get ripped off. bought one but ended up giving it back to them 2 seconds later cause my son started crying cause he didn’t get one. was refused refund so told them to keep it and left. Hope they enjoy their free Donut. Absolutely pathetic behaviour doing that to a 4 & 5 year old hope they feel big and powerful (wouldn’t be an issue if everyone was included but as soon as you single children out for no reason you become the biggest scum to...

We just love bakeries and the Tailem Bend Bakery did not disappoint. To be truthful, I had read of the enormous donuts they had on offer and as we were heading to Adelaide anyway, we decided to do the extra hour and find out for ourselves. Having been through Tailem Bend many times, this was the first time to actually visit. Like any good country bakery, it was wonderful. From the friendly, helpful staff to the scrumptious bakery scents, I heartily recommend you take a break here. The large (dinner plate sized) donuts need to be ordered in advance, but if you are a donut fan, like I am, you will not be disappointed. They come in chocolate, sprinkles or cinnamon sugar. As we happily strolled out with our purchase, there was mention of a delicious jam and cream one also. That might mean another trip later.
