When I told the chef we were tossing up whether to eat at Lucky Ducks or at a Port Arthur place that had good main meals at $10 less than his, he replied "You get what you pay for". Unfortunately that didn't turn out to be true in this case. My main course of quail turned out to be only a bit more substantial than what I've had elsewhere as an entree for about half the price. The miserable little bird (quite tasty, but ONE only!) was padded out with a few bits of roast veg and some sort of salad - not what I wanted on a cold winter's night. I don't have a big appetite but even for me it was not a sufficient meal, especially for $36.
That price for such a meagre meal would have been more understandable had it been at a well-furnished restaurant with better service in a location where rental prices for premises are high, but this is basically a small country town cafe with unappealingly cheap-looking bare-topped tables and utensils plonked down when you order. Local red wine was available, but not an appropriate wine glass such as I'd expect for those prices. Perhaps good earlier reviews have given the owners the idea that it's OK to keep jacking up the meal prices. We would have done better just to have had a coffee while enjoying the view during the day, as there's no view to compensate for an expensive evening meal when it gets dark...
Read moreAs far as cosy, roadside cafe for a bite to eat goes, Lucky Ducks it a top contender, make sure you stop in here. The sleepy little cafe was clearly a fave local spot with lots of comings and goings of people and buzz while we were there. Lovely staff greeting and took our order.
The Potato & Leek Soup was heavenly on a chilly day, full of flavour! My hats off to the chef for it and the gorgeous presentation too. My husband had the curry sausage pie which disappeared in two bites ;) with a generous salad full of beautiful micro greens and minty peas which was a nice change to the usual garden salad. You can tell the team clearly love what they do as it came through in the food and flavour in a big way.
We loved our lunch here, and spent a good hour doing the newspaper quiz and enjoying a glass of wine while we took in the view of the cray pots over in the bay and whiled away time.
Highly recommend if you’re looking for a cosy, local meal. Thanks so much for having us...

The interior of the cafe is inviting and cozy with plenty of comfortable seating - perfect for enjoying a hot cup of coffee with friends. Many of the tables come with their own unique views which makes it all the more enjoyable. The staff are friendly and accommodating which adds to the overall experience.
Coming to the food, Lucky Duck Cafe does not disappoint. I tried their iconic scrambled eggs which came served with mushrooms, chorizo and tasty chilli baked beans. The combination was just perfect. It was incredibly delicious and had me wanting more!
The cafe also offers an extensive selection of teas and coffees as well as other hot and cold drinks.
Overall, I'm highly impressed with Grant and his team at the Lucky Duck Cafe. If you're ever in Tasmania, make sure you drop by! You won't be...
