My favourite place to stop on the way to Queenstown or pre- or post-bushwalk in the area. The burgers are delicious - some of the best in Tassie - and reasonably priced too. The addition of salad is always welcome after a multi-day bushwalk. The closing times seem to change seasonally so don’t rely on Google Maps times (when we visited on Sunday it had an advertised closing time of 4.30pm, even though Google said 5pm). With the Lake St Clare visitor centre cafe now overpriced and exceptionally mediocre, the Hungry Wombat is a wonderful alternative. They have landscaped the outdoor eating area recently with some ferns and extra seating. They now have low-key outdoor tables that are sheltered from rain and wind.

We were in the cafe for lunch and noticed that they were also doing evening meals. I ask the chef what was in the menu, too which was advised that it differs on each night. The night we dined here we had the Pizza and Pork Belly and salad. The cafe is also licensed and very reasonably priced for the remote area it is located. Pizza was very well cooked and taste was excellent. Pork Belly was tender and crispy, salad was a great side as it was a light meal which was also great for my celiac requirements. The outdoor dining on the night was great with the sunny evening. Would definitely return if in the area again.

Our experience here was mixed. The food was actually very good. It was a very very cold day and we were soaked from the rain as we were riding motorbikes. We asked if the wood fire or other heating could be put on - there were a lot of other bikers wet and cold - and they said no. It was very busy and there were not enough seats and tables for everyone. The toilets were ok but not great. Maybe in summer I would recommend you go here but not the best customer service or care.

"Kitchen's close" I stifled a groan. My stomach didn't. The three workers looked to us and back to the pie warmer. Surely between the three of them they could hustle up the manpower to re-open the kitchen? Nope, they wanted us to buy those crusty pies which had been stewing deliciously in the warmer all day. "We have beef curry, vegie, chicken.." The ladies words drawled on. It was 3pm, for ocne Derwent bridge was sunny, and a trickle of sweat rolled down my brow, my stomach rumbled, my hands shook . The hungry wombat, I mused, must cater only to it's name sake, some nocturnal animal willing to prey upon roadkill and french backpackers. Some rabid creature of matted fur and tasteless culinary habits as to not even ask if the kitchen was closed.

I slammed a note on the bench. "Fine. We'll take the pies." At least they would give us a discount, the pies weren't going to last another day without plastic surgery. This was Australia.

No change came back. We sat out in the sun and chewed the pastry and swallowed what I must concede was good tasting mince.

A wombat, I believe scuttled past us. It may have been a local, I am not sure. What I am sure is that it winked at me. Did it know something I didn't ? Was the kitchen only closed to us "tourists", us "outlanders"? I vowed then, wiping my greasy hands on my short-shorts, that i would get to the bottom of this. I will be back. I have no choice, there is not much else...

I am not a Tasmania's local and I was treated as that..

My partner and I, we stop by for a quick breakfast as we were having a road trip around Tasmania. Which was amazing! (If removing the Hungry Wombat experience).

We stopped by at the Hungry Wombat Cafe. To start with, the lady at the front, was not very welcoming, with no smile and screaming to the other employees, but we were hungry so we didn't take that into much consideration.

We ordered our food, we ate and I kindly thank the chef after having our breakfast. I remember congratulating him for the great meal.

I was seeking to create a better atmosphere, as from the start we didn't feel welcomed and I found thoughtful to show our gratitude for his labor.

The chef, sounding and looking unfriendly he stared at me and said he had added a "local secret ingredient"..

My partner and I, we got a total weird vibe out of it and decided to never recommend this place.

They need to better their service and ways to treat people. I wouldn't risk to eat there again.

I recommend you to read all the lowest stars reviews and you will notice a pattern on their hygiene and on the way they treat people.

Hopefully this business story change to a possitive one...

Literally the only place to eat hot food for miles around. We left Queenstown in the morning and this was the first place serving food that we encountered on the highway. This cafe is in the middle of nowhere. As a result it gets very busy. We were there in October and it was full (weather too bad for outdoor seating). The food is standard comfort food to fill you up. Nothing fancy about it and options are quite limited. They serve pies and meals like burgers. They had pizza on the menu but I think it was only offered in the evening during high season. It was our only hot meal of the day so we were very grateful for it as it filled us up and was fairly decent. The prices weren't too bad either considering the...
