Utterly disappointed at the food & portion sizes, particularly for the price $38.90 for 2 people. We detoured almost 2 hours off track to visit here because of Facebook recommendations. Curried Scallop Pie $11.30 with side salad $6.90 was nice & fresh. I wouldn't say it's worth $18.20! Beef & Mushroom Pie $8.20 was luke warm, soggy like it was headed in a microwave, with a couple of huge chunks of beef, lots of sliced uncooked mushrooms that didn'tcook too well in the oven - posdibly because it wasn't cooked long enough? Vanilla Slice $7.50 was nice. I don't eat them usually, but wanted to try it because it was so famous. It's 6cm x 4cm & I thought it was ok. A bit tasteless, but I've got nothing to compare it too. It had no ivong on it, but dusted with icing sugar. It was definitely made fresh. Lemon Slice $5 was rock hard, tasteless & seemed days old. I couldn't even put my fork in it to break it, & when I tried to break it in half with my hands, it crumbled. I couldn't taste any lemon. The icing was old & dry. I actually took it back & asked if it was baked fresh & the young backpacker guy said yes & brought me another one, but I asked for a refund because all if them looked the same in the cabinet. It was so tiny - slightly bigger than the end of my fork 2cm x 5cm maybe? The front area was run by 3 very young backpackers. I have eaten at a tonne of bakeries all over Aus & the world. Some of my favs are Babinda in Qld, Donnybrook & Mt Barker in WA & Ambience in Cobram, Vic. This was was below even the hundreds of 'average' ones...

Warning to Asian tourists: I had a very upsetting experience at Ross Bakery. I politely asked to order one slice of cake to eat in and two to take away — they refused, saying “we’re busy” and “maybe later.”

Later, when I went to order a mushroom beef pie for my child, I politely asked if I could have a second slice of cake to dine in — and was refused again with the same excuse.

No one told me more cakes were coming soon — yet just 10 minutes later, I saw other tables being served fresh slices.

Meanwhile, I waited over 15 minutes for my order, only to be told it was lost. No apology.

I was calm and respectful the whole time, but was dismissed, ignored, and treated unfairly.

The way I was treated felt racist — whether intentional or not, it was unacceptable behavior toward a polite paying customer.

I’ve lived in Tasmania for eight years, and Ross Bakery used to hold fond memories for me. I don’t know what has changed in their management or service model, but I was shocked by how poorly I was treated today.

My parents have run food businesses for decades, and I grew up in that environment. I know exactly what professional service looks like — and today’s experience was absolutely unacceptable.

I know that Chinese tourists may not always be welcomed by some, but I don’t believe that should ever come down to race. People from every background can be kind or rude, respectful or not — just like how this staff member chose to treat me.

Disrespect has nothing to do with race. But how we choose to treat others says...

I love Ross, I would buy and live here if I could.

Dropped in the other day, price was a little higher than I expected, but the food was great. Very tasty pies.

The main issue I had was the service. A French man whom was blunt and a tad rude really. I could see on his face on arrival the roll of his eyes. I was clear and percise with my order, I had paid, and then received half of my order, I questioned where the cakes were? As he starred at me like I was daft for even asking in the first place, he then gave me one cake that I hadn't ordered. I questioned the cake and told him that was not what I had ordered, only to have the word "what" ranted towards me, over and over again... no "pardon" or "C'est quoi" or "C'est que ce"... just "WHAT?" over and over again. He then finally gave me a receipt, I mentioned to him he had only got half the order correct and when I mentioned again what I had ordered, he seemed confused and Impatient. I told him to remove the cost of the cake he charged me and add on the additional ones that I wanted, and paid in two different transactions. This was not a language barrier at all... just poor attitude.

Pie was tasty, chunky meat and a great crust.

Takeaway service, even though it should have been simple, was not such a wonderful experience.

Anyhow, two pies, sausage roll, 3 drinks and 3 cakes...

Ross Bakery... what a quaint bakery in what I can only describe as a lovely little town! With its periodic buildings, old world feel, slight drizzle, and falling autumn leaves, I felt like we were in the UK! 🍂🥰 The Ross Bakery was a treat, with its original 1860s wood-fired oven still turning out those baked goods! We stopped for a small bite for lunch and had to try their vanilla slice (allegedly Tasmania's best... and it possibly is, but I didn't try Vanilla Slice anywhere else to compare). The food was delicious. There was some seating inside and immediately outside the bakery, and extra seating in the courtyard. The staff are happy to show you the old oven when they are not busy. While we were there, the bakery had a consistent flow of customers, so we did not trouble them for a look. This review noted a hotel (I didn't know it had one). We didn't stay, so I can not comment.

We were looking for nice place to have breakfast and apparently this place offers the best vanilla slice. We tried the best stuff back in Europe. Hungarians call it Krémes, Bosnians and Serbians call it Krempita, Germans call it Cremeschnitte, I've tried the best ones made by Hungarians. Ross bakery is good enough for a breakfast but they take it a bit too far to call things "the best". Basically its full of asian tourists so you will be lucky to find a seat as they come in buses. Ross has a few more places to offer. we walked into the very next café and it was empty. The buses must have an agreement with the bakery. ;) it appears the other businesses just pick up the crumbs. While you are there check out the holden garage (cash only) and wool museum down the road.
