Don’t come if you want fresh, warm food and good service. We visited for Mother’s day. Started off bumpy, not able to find our table (our fault), but then all of the chairs had crumbs where they “wipe” the table and wipe them all onto the chairs. No big deal but it doesn’t take much to properly clean your tables. Only one menu at the table so we had to find another, reception wasn’t great so we couldn’t open it on the website, not their fault. Now for the real kick!
We order, and a lady comes out barely 5 minutes later. Great fast service you might think? No! We think this must be wrong, we just ordered. So when the lady says “2 dutch apples”, we check if this is ours by saying “we got 2 apple custard crumbles” and she responds with attitude “if that’s what YOU want to call it”, no, that’s how it was listed on the menu and we wanted to check it was what we ordered. Another had ordered lasagna, so we wanted to check that would also be coming out at the same time since it generally takes longer to heat etc and got more attitude from the lady about it. In the mean time, looked at my pancake and it was very pale, so I touched it to feel, IT WAS STONE COLD, not a warm pancake, not even nuked in the microwave, it was stone cold. Pre-cooked and sat on the bench for orders. Not made to order as they claim in other reviews at all. We even saw the stack of them sitting there! Take to eating it, the sauce, custard and apple were also cold! No warmth in sight. Took a first bite and the apple was fizzy! Fermented! Inedible, put them onto a coffee saucer. (Not another plate, that’s $2). The “crumble” was a semi crumpled marie biscuit (or similar)
We told the waitress when she came back out and got “Oh, okay. I’ll pass that on”, no apology or anything for the fact we couldn’t eat the main ingredient of the toppings. This pancake was $28 by the way. Looking back we wish we had asked them for a partial refund or something because it was just ridiculous to pay $28(x2) for inedible apples and cold pancakes.
Unfortunately, won’t be coming back. Very disappointed, we drove an hour to Oatlands coming based off good reviews, but seems these likely extend only to...
Read moreOn our drive through the Midlands, we decided to stop at Oatlands for a late lunch. Based on the online reviews we decided that the Pancake and Crepe shop looked like a winner. The cafe is partly located in a charming addition to an 1832 stone stable. There are tables in the old stable building (a bit dark for my liking), an indoor area, next to the front counter/kitchen, or a delightful cottage garden area outside (bit of drizzle - so we opted to sit inside). The decor is relatively quirky, even a bit kitsch, with pottery figurines, decorative teacups/tea pots and oil paintings of dogs and cats, but that sets it apart from other cafes.
We rocked up just after 2pm, which was lucky as it closes at 2:30pm. Hungry, I ordered the Chicken, Bacon and Mushroom Crêpe, with chef's salad ($25) and my wife had the corn fritters with Quinoa Salad ($20). I also went with one of their milkshakes ($8). The servings were particularly generous, which was good because I was starving but it was very sloppy and messy. The crepe was swimming in a creamy sauce, which overwhelmed everything else. The chicken, mushrooms and bacon were decent sized chunks, but I found it hard to find/taste the crêpe, not certain if the grated cheese on top was necessary. My wife liked her meal but felt the quinoa could have been a little fluffy and lacked a dressing.
I guess that maybe I am being a bit fussy, as I'm used to good crêpes, that aren't drowning in sauce. I would reiterate it was extremely filling, just what I needed. Was it amazing...
Read moreMy friend and I decided to visit this morning as we had been here many years ago. There are new owners now who are very warm and hospital people (extra points for offering us a blanket to throw over our laps as had to sit outside as we had our furry friend with us too). My friend had the minestrone soup (with french toast) and I had the salted caramel pancake. I am a foodie and have eaten at some very nice places in my travels...I would 100% recommend that you stop by here on your travels. I was very ladylike in that I didn't lick the plate at the end (the salty caramel sauce was to die for) and I had a spoonful of my friends minestrone soup and it was one of the best soups in all honesty that I have tasted in a long time. From Liz, Peter and little collie Bella we give you a 10/10 and Bella gives a 4...
