We made a random booking at Flutterbies after spotting it online. Having never been in the town or general area, we quickly realised the sheer beauty of the place, tucked away in nature and possessing a rare, blissful vibe among the people.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a lovely lady who, for all intents and purposes, appeared to act as a guide/welcoming party. She directed us to one of the wait staff and we were seated.
We were given several choices (booth, tea room or outside) which was greatly appreciated. Booth it was. Unfortunately, we then sat and waited, for about 15 minutes, while several staff members passed by again and again. Eventually I had to approach the payment counter as I'd become unsure it was table service. The lady there was great, not only apologising but immediately taking our meals order.
As I returned to my table a different, very friendly (American Aussie) staff member came to serve, realised what had happened, also apologised and then completed our drinks and desserts order. Great recovery, folks! Sadly, the gentleman that then delivered our drinks virtually banged mine onto the table, without even looking at me, before walking off. Perhaps preoccupied or busy but, nevertheless, blatant enough that my wife and I instantly glanced at each other in surprise.
The meals were quickly served. My smashed avo on sour dough, with optional poached egg and field mushrooms, was delicious. The serving size was huge, doubling what I receive in many other establishments. The egg was cooked perfectly (a rarity) and there was mountains of avo and rocket. There was also a smokiness present that I really enjoyed, even though I couldn't work out where it came from. My only criticism, for the kitchen staff, is to be gentle with the Vegemite. The spread was quite heavy handed and, as a result, dominated the meal. It also explains why, when ordering, the lady double checked if I wanted it in the meal, even though it's a standard inclusion on the menu.
My wife had what I believe was the Nourishing Salad Bowl, which she enjoyed and devoured. It was well presented, tasty and healthy. We shared some potato wedges, which were okay but not outstanding. They were lifted by the amazing tomato relish/chutney which was delicious.
Drinks were a rosewater lemonade, banana lassi, flat white and a turmeric coconut latte, all of which we enjoyed. Last but not least, dessert consisted of Persian love cake (a fairy floss topped work of art that truly made my wife's day as she regressed into childhood princess mode!), and the orange & almond cake which was, as intended, incredibly moist and reasonably tasty. The cakes ensured the lunch ended on a strongly positive note.
Overall, this establishment, with its quirky arcade and various stores, verged incredibly close to being 5 stars. Other than the somewhat inconsistent service, this experience was excellent. We have absolutely no doubt that we will again visit Flutterbies in months to come. And for the record that, for us, is almost a...
Read moreWe had very fond memories of the amazing food here from years ago, so we diverted off our drive up the coast to stop by for lunch. It was quiet, so we could sit anywhere we liked and relax, which was lovely. The male staff member was attentive to take our initial order, but we had trouble getting his attention later to order dessert (even though it was extremely quiet). The female staff member hardly looked at us or smiled, so I can only assume she was having a bad day. The chicken pot pie was delicious and very filling, just as we remembered. Very happy with our choice for main!
The desserts, however, were a bitter disappointment. I love scones and will happily stop by cafes to try them out - my memories of the Flutterbies ones were that they were some of the best I've ever had! Unfortunately today, they were overcooked and chewy, with none of the lightness that made them so memorable and delicious last time. The apple pie was so scorching hot it was almost impossible to eat, the pastry was thin and lacked flavour and the apple was all puree rather than any chunks. This is enough to make me question whether we'll make the effort to stop in again in future, as the desserts are one of the main...
Read moreI don’t think I’ve ever spoken so highly of a cafe before but Flutterbies was an absolutely lovely cafe to visit! From the staff to the decor to the live music that was playing today! The vibe was so calm and chill, helped calm the nerves from the scary yet extremely flooded drive. When we first walked in, the owners (I hope I’m right) greeted us so politely, showed us to the different rooms they offer to guests and were overall very friendly people, who were happy to help whenever. The food was served in such a generous amount too! I had the famous pie and it was most definitely the best I’ve ever had. The sauce that came with the pie added a unique but essential flavour! Filled to the brim; made the drive in the horrific weather extremely worthwhile! I definitely would recommend this to anyone who visits the cafe! The rose water lemonade was yet another special drink I tried for the first time. The flavour was extravagant. They even had a coin jar, accepting donations for animal welfare! I wish they’d open one up in Sydney! Most definitely a...
