Avenel Cafe — Restaurant in Victoria

8 of us pulled up in our friends mini bus having travelled from Nagambie to Avenel to have lunch & support a small local business while checking out the town only to be told they aren't set up for "tour buses". Yes, our friend runs a tour company & is very big on supporting small country town businesses, but we were NOT on tour, we were a group of friends using her bus while all holidaying. He told us if we all ordered the wait could be over an hour. There were only 4 other patrons in at the time so this response was surprising. So all but 3 cancelled our order & went elsewhere. The 3 that stayed said the food was nice & they didn't have to wait that long. We were driving through to Melbourne & broke the 12hr trip by staying in Albury for the night then headed to Melbourne the next day. We decided to stop in for something to eat & coffee & Avenel cafe came up on Google maps. After reading some of the reviews we decided we would call in. So glad we did, even the drive along the road is pretty & serene. Shaun is very friendly & loves a chat. When we mentioned that we were going to Melbourne for the tennis he told us the best way to walk from where we’re staying. We had the Souvlaki’s which were very yummy & everything is made fresh & is worth the wait, which wasn’t very long & time was filled by conversation anyway. Exceptional!! Wonderful, friendly, accommodating, delicious, great value.. just a few words to describe our experience with Shaun at the Avenel Cafe! A very lovely man who made sure our food was delicious, fresh and filling, as I'm sure he does for every customer who walks through the door. We just happened to stumble across the place on a walk through town, we popped in and greeted with so much kindness which was in itself, enough to want to spend our money, and boy we were not disappointed. The steak sandwich was fantastic and the other half proclaims it's the best schnitzel, cheese and gravy roll he's ever had! Shall we ever run up the hume again, we will be stopping by, for sure!!...
