Shining from atop the slight slopes of Castletown, nestled between a busy road and the BP service station we have Nannygai on the hill. Location is everything to some but not to them. But of course there's plenty of parking if you don't mind parking in other businesses bays.
But I digress.
After taking in the fumes you have two options of dining takeaway or dining in. Make your choice carefully though because if you decide to takeaway you are often reminded that you belong on the street with very little cover while you wait. Splendid choice in a town that rains every other hour. You may notice the comically tight counter you must squeeze between in order to order. You may look inside but you may not use their facilities or even wait.
The atmosphere inside is a mixed bag. Do you like watching tv? They've got you covered. Do you like an Eiffel tower? They have that too!. Water feature for reasons? Don't go without! Furniture lifted from a Chinese restaurant? Succulent Chinese meal! Professional waiters? Okay they are polite and should be commended. Leather bound menu's with hand written selection on near orange hi-vis spec paper? Printer ink in this economy?! Confusing choices of décor but it's warm and dry (providing you stay out of the splash zone of that water feature)
Again I digress. I promise I'll get to the point.
Having selected the takeaway course of The beef burger which is little difference to all the other burgers minus the protein and the Puttanesca a pasta dish filled with promises. Well promise broken. Glaringly the pasta was under cooked, possibly handmade but under cooked which is perhaps worst than overcooked. Beef burger on the other hand? It was nice but not screaming a great deal. Chips? Ah no you pay extra for the starch gold.
Ask me if I enjoyed the experience? Sorry but no. They have an over priced menu inside and out with mashed together, poorly executed décor for an establishment that was under construction for what seemed forever. The solution? Reverse time and stay in the fish and chip shop located just a short walk away. Stay a favourite fish and chip shop known for doing one thing well or maybe just sit down with a pen and orange hi-vis spec paper to write down the pros and cons the average punter may encounter.
Don't call me Kate Bush because I'm not running up that hill for Nannygai on the hill.
Edit* altered review after appalling service and food from the new and improved Nannygai on the hill. Don't be fooled into believing they have changed for the better. Specials that laugh in face, prices that prey on your naivety of an affordable fish and chip meal and service spending more time fixing the mistakes of management than actively serving new customers to any degree.
This is a blight on our south east...
Read moreGreat service but few things to improve. We booked a table for 4 few days in advance and ended up being stacked on two tables against the counter which was absolutely ridiculous but thanks to the waiter we managed to move to another table once it has cleared off. Don't overbook the dinning room it will only give a bad experience to your customers. And instead you should line up few stools so people can dine at the counter. Food is well cooked but way too pricy ! Nothing justify a fish and chips for 45$... 30 should be a max for what it is ,good but nothing different than a pub meal. Also the menu has very few options for a seafood place and you better order from the take away. Well done for sourcing local products, it is always a plus ! The decoration is debatable, why is there a tv ?! we are not going to the restaurant to watch the footy. And I won't talk about the eiffel tower, the water fall and the insulting frame people on a special diet because it is probably personnal taste. The light is way too bright and please, you can do better on the menu presentation. You have those nice leathery books for it. why choosing this aggressive orange empty pages with hand writted added dishes. Black on white with spaces between the lines so the text isn't all stuffed on the top of the pages wouldn't take much and would add a lot to the experience.
To sum up, I would say we felt having a nice fish and chips in a the dinning room of a roadhouse for the price of a gastronomic restaurant.
Could improve a lot...
Read moreNannygai on the Hill was an underwhelming dining experience. I had ordered the Frutti di Mare and as someone who loves sauces The dish lacked depth and balance, tasted like it came from a bottle. Furthermore, the dish had an overwhelming amount of sauce, leaving me unable the sauce finish it (favourite part). The limited choice between grilled and battered nannygai was also underwhelming, but i guess they were keeping to a theme. The chips that accompanied the fish were lukewarm upon arrival which was slightly disappointing for a meal that was in the 40s range. While the service was friendly, and the restaurant had a fresh ambiance, these factors couldn't compensate for the overall lackluster experience. Considering the prices, Nannygai on the Hill felt overpriced and failed to deliver. Unfortunately, I can only give it a rating...
