I will NEVER step foot in this 'beach'-side establishment again. I was recommended by locals to go in to get coffees. After purchasing 3 coffees to takeaway I felt I was 'discriminatorily-profiled' by the staff member who had served me. I am not white. I was wearing a smart first-responder uniform freshly put on. With a countenance of rude disdain the staff member that had just taken my payment told me I must wait outside and told another staff member I was not to be inside. Yet the take-away customer, before me, a white man in very casual clothes was waiting inside for his coffee. In comparison, a third staff member who made my coffees treated me with kind respect and in a normal way. With a pleasant smile she gestured to me my coffees were ready and she looked confused when I was apprehensive to come inside. As I went to collect my coffees the first staff member rushed over to expel me. It was a truly horrible and degrading experience. I told the locals of the incident. They all are white males. They said they had never been treated that way. So I would like to warn anyone of colour that this establishment was not safe for me. Addendum... After reading the response by the establishment below. At no time was foot attire raised with me and purporting this is just not true. I had two pairs of shoes outside in my bag with my team that I would have put on in the over 10 minutes I waited for the coffee. I have spoken to the locals who suggested for me to go in to buy coffees and they have told me they get served just as I was dressed but "looking more shabby". The person who first served me was not friendly or kind from the outset. When I ordered, I enquired about whether the cocoa used by the barista for a mocha was sweetened with sugar. I immediately felt she was annoyed. I withdrew my question and simply ordered 3 flat whites. I was trying to balance the 3 very hot large coffees in thin paper cups and leave when she chose to rush over. As she approached me, I did not "yell", I spoke in a raised voice so other patrons could hear my distress. I wanted to get out and not get burned. What did this staff member want to rush over to me for when I was exiting? I still solemnly feel that if I had been white I would never have been treated...
Read moreWe were shown a table and seated. Young lady came and poured two glasses of water whilst we looked at the menu. We asked a question regarding the menu. She seemed very uninformed and gave a nonsensical reply. After waiting an extended period of time for someone to take our order I went to the Front Counter to ask if I need to come to the Counter or do they come to the Table. She came with me to the Table and took our order. We asked for more water. Eventually someone came to the Table. We had to actually ask for her to leave a bottle on the Table which she did. Table next to us ordered after us and received their meals and we continued to wait. When the meals eventually arrived, beyond 45 minutes later, she was quite unapologetic. We had to go back to the Counter and ask for a Steak knife for our meal. In the whole time there were seven occupied tables in the restaurant. In conclusion food was good, prices not cheap, considering that the service was non-existent, substandard and the staff's attitude was no better. I would not recommend Portofinos to anyone. There were several flies around our Table and a bird fluttering around. I even noticed a chip on the floor which a patron carefully stepped over. It remained there when we left. Very...
Read moreMy Wife and I had lunch on Australia Day at the restaurant. Staff were very unattentive, We had to take cutlery from another table as the table we were seated at had not been set up correctly. Our drinks came out incorrectly. I ordered a Burbon & Coke and received a Southern Comfort and coke. My rack of lamb was very over cooked, dry and all the pumpkin and potato rosti was dry and hard. My wife had a Beetroot/Pumpkin Salad. Lots of spinach leaves and 5 small pieces of pumpkin, 5 half cherry tomatoes and 5 pieces of feta cheese. Both meals were average. My wife found a piece of plastic container in her salad and when we told the lady on reception, she replied, Oh! that happens sometimes when they open the containers. 15% surcharge was applied to the meal. I totally understand that on a Public holiday, but getting an very poor lamb rack at $46 was unacceptable. Staff white T-Shirts need to fit staff and should possibly be tucked into their pants. Most were wearing very large sloppy T-Shirts some nearly down to their knees. No staff member came back to our table to see how our meals were, in fact most staff were walking around and not giving customers any eye contact. We would not recommend this restaurant and will not be...
