This restaurant had been highly recommended to my mum by one of her friends that lives in the area. As it was my mums birthday this was where she wanted to go which is a fair distance away (it took over an hour for us to get there), but a birthday is s birthday.
The restaurant is not huge, some might say quaint, but it is a really nice little place. The decor is great especially with those old photos, movie stills and advertising of cinema classics. The lunch time special is astoundingly good value, hands down, especially for the quality of the food.
So just how good is the food?
Well, let's be honest here, it's not good........it's fantastic, delicious and has a freshness of quality ingredients that some other Italian restaurants lack. The portions, even for the lunchtime special are pretty big. If you go away from here hungry then you must be a massive eater. I had held back from my usual morning feeds to enjoy a big late lunch and I seriously doubt that I will be needing anything for dinner.
Bruschetta with add your own olive oil and balsamic vinegar. For me that was such a pleasant change from having it come out pre-drizzled (or drowned) and I could adjust it to my own personal palate, bravo!
We ordered for mains the lasagne of which as soon as it hit the table the first thing that caught my eye was the thickness of the pasta layers, no skimping here and certainly not a microwave meal. It looked great and I was feeling a bit envious. However.....I had the Arrabiata.....and I was not disappointed. Again, a side condiment dish of sliced chilli in oil, dried & crushed chilli and parmesan was just one of those excellent little touches to be able to add your own for personal preference. I love chilli so I could get a good zing without the food being overly spicy or totally lacklustre as it can be elsewhere. Seriously, that's top notch in my book.
Dessert? Yes, even though we were full, we had to have the tiramisu. I love a good one and will be honest if I have a bad one. Today's was delicious. The added fresh strawberry with whipped cream was a nice enough touch but for me it wasn't necessary and neither was that strawberry syrup, but that's just personal preference. It was still excellent and I would happily have it again, in a heartbeat.
The service here too is excellent, we could not knock anything. They went above and beyond our expectations, upon finding out that it was my mother's birthday well, they gave her an additional sweet gift (even though we were already incredibly full) and I had to help her out eating it (I didn't complain). There was also a nice little treat for her as we were leaving. I won't mention what that was as everyone might want one. But really, she was so impressed and surprised.
This restaurant is well worth the long trip and we'd be more than happy to...
Read moreThe food here is really, really delicious. Since discovering it only recently in January, we have been back 4 times. The portions are fresh, generous and absolutely on point. The staff are gorgeous and attentive and the menu inexpensive and diverse and so far we have not been disappointed with anything. They are also open for lunch and do $15 specials. Again-all amazing. Highly recommend for anyone who loves good Italian food. I'd travel from the other side of the freeway to dine here-thankfully we don't have to. Do give it a try, you can thank me later. edited to add* Ok, so I have decided to edit this review as the last 2 times we have been here, the food has been disappointingly bad. We were seated near an open part of the kitchen and it took me a few minutes to realise that the microwave we could see the back of and hear was getting a huge amount of work. A very disconcerting amount of microwaving if I'm being honest. I have worked for many years in various restaurant kitchens and if I had used the microwave at all, I would have been chastised, it was more for an emergency thawing of something or softening butter etc. The spaghetti bolognese my daughter had was watery-you know, like if you had microwaved the sauce before putting it on the pasta and my lasagne was cold in the middle. So I told the waitress and although I said I would still eat it, she insisted on having it heated up again so took it from me, obviously the microwave was already in use for some other tables meals so I had to wait around 10 minutes or so and in that time, my whole family had almost finished their meals. When my lasagne finally came out of the microwave-(we could hear it crackling and bubbling when it was in the microwave for around 4 minutes)- I knew, it was going to be essentially a plate of lava. And that's exactly what happened. Way too hot for me to eat and by the time it was cool enough, the kids were finished and over it and ready to go so I just had to have them put it in a take home container and left. I used to tell people we had found a gem and insist people go there, but now-im going to change my advice and say dont go there. It was better before. I'm not sure why it has changed but we wont be back....
Read moreall people with dietary preferences beware.Where to start. we ordered in for a special event, I ordered the vegetarian pasta tagliatelle. the taste was good at the start thought the first thing we noted was that it wasn't really proper tagliatelle but the cheaper fettuccine you can purchase in the shops. we thought, oh well...though we were excited about getting a proper Italian pasta when we ordered. taste is alright and we carried on. then I noticed grit while I ate, might be the veg not cleaned properly or whatever but it was unpleasant to chew. I was hungry and it was late so, what else can you do but just eat, not this much wouldn't have made me complain. we usually understand that mistakes happen or people might have different opinions about small things. carry on. next thing you know, I find a piece of chicken meat in the pasta! this is horrible, considering I don't eat meat, ever. next day I rang and complained. the manager/owner argued with me by institute that it wasn't fettuccine, then kind of stopped when I mentioned the grit and meat, he did say sorry and that he is vegetarian too so he understands. and said something about a pot might have been shared to cook in for dishes or something. suggested that he can give me a free pasta next time I ordered. I asked instead for a refund. he agreed, asked to text him my details. suffice it to say that I rang 5 times in total, I was polite and gentle but firm, as excuses were made, once he preteded to not be the owner but the manager and took my number again, closing the phone saying I'm sorry you had meat in your pasta (I didn't mention this on the call till he said it, how would he know me and my complaint without being the same person I spoke to earlier and sound the same? ) .I got the refund for just that one dish after 2 weeks + of asking and waiting. not even decent enough to refund the while bill? after so much? so anyhow, all people with intolerance or dietary preferences, beware! I'm sorry to write this for any small business, but you were given plenty of chances to make this better. thanks for refunding me what you did...
