For a recent family gathering at my sister’s house in nearby Seiersberg, my sister had booked my father and I into the Feldkirchnerhof, just a five minute drive from her place. Feldkirchen is a very small town on the outskirts of Graz, a short drive from Graz airport. If you’re visiting Graz for business or leisure, a two minute walk from the hotel is an S-Bahn station (similar to our DART system in Dublin) from where a half-hourly train service will take you to Graz main railway station in the city centre in less than 15 minutes. Adjacent the railway, there is also a bus terminal servicing a number of different lines. ||||The hotel is a large building on Feldkirchen’s main street. There is a small car park at the hotel’s rear, next to the beer garden, and beyond that private car park is a larger, public car park apparently serving as a park & ride facility as well as facilitating the adjacent church and parish hall. ||||Despite the hotel’s location and our room being located at the rear, overlooking the car park, we found our room pleasantly quiet. It’s not like you’re in a large, busy town after all. Yes, the near-by church starts ringing its bells in the early morning, but after our first morning’s shocked awakening at the clatter, we didn’t even wake up from it on the remaining days of our stay.||||Upon arrival at the Feldkirchnerhof, we went into the main bar and restaurant in order to check in. The hotel’s reception is a tiny but sufficient area next to the bar. We were greeted by a very pleasant young man who checked us in and then even carried our heavy luggage up to our room on the second floor. The elderly or unfirm might note that the hotel does not have a lift! The stone stairwell leading up to the rooms gave the impression of an old-fashioned apartment house from back in the sixties or so; there is a dentist’s surgery on the first floor and there seem to be one or two private apartments as well. Conveniently, we were able to access the stairwell from a separate outside door at the side of the building, thereby avoiding the restaurant’s opening hours and coming and going as we pleased.||||Our room (no. 26) was large and airy, with the most beautiful parquet flooring, a big double bed, a very large wardrobe with small safe (alas, hardly any clothes hangers), radiators and large roof windows in the bedroom as well the large shower room, a dining table with two chairs, proofing very useful as a desk for my evenings’ work, and a large flat screen TV which even had BBC News (very important in these times of Brexit). WiFi reception was excellent. The bedroom and shower room were spotlessly clean throughout our four night stay. Also, throughout our stay, neighbouring rooms along our hallway were clearly in use (as we saw the cleaning trolley parked outside in the mornings) but the house was pleasantly quiet at all times.||||I was surprised to learn that Austria has not yet implemented a smoking ban in bars and restaurants, and I was relieved that the Feldkirchnerhof had voluntarily implemented a smoking ban about a year ago. As a result, all ground floor facilities including the breakfast room which is open to the main restaurant area and bar, smelled beautifully fresh as did the rest of the house and our bedroom. ||||Living in Ireland, I found the breakfast buffet included in the room price extremely tiny but my German father thought it average in size and sufficient to his needs. There were two choices of children’s cereal (no proper muesli), some bread rolls and ||a couple of croissants, a yogurt or two, then a small selection of cheese, cold cuts and jam, water and a drink resembling orange MiWadi. We were offered a soft boiled egg every morning. Being used to fabulous breakfast buffets even at small hostelries here in Ireland, I was admittedly disappointed with what was on offer here, but their saving grace was the truly spectacularly good coffee. The tall young man who had welcomed us to the hotel on our first day also acted as breakfast room manager, and we found him very personable and friendly throughout.||||On one morning, we had a look at the restaurant menu and thought it offered fabulous sounding choices for both lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, we never got to taste their fare due to us eating at my sister’s house every day, but we both would have loved to try some of the local cuisine. ||||All in all, I’m glad to report on a very pleasant four night stay at the Feldkirchnerhof. Had the breakfast buffet been more generous and appetising, I would not have hesitated to...
Read moreStayed at this hotel whilst on business in Graz.||On arrival the first night i was very disappointed to find the hotel all in darkness.||Luckily the taxi driver helped me with my case and he translated the message that advised you to call a number and they would come and take you to your room.||I waited some ten minutes and someone arrived to show me to my room.||He explained that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and this was the reason for the darkness because the bar also serves as a reception desk.||I had a room on the top floor and it is 51 steep steps to get there so wasn't easy with a heavy suitcase.||I had a front room that overlooked the village street below so quite pleasant.||The room was well furnished with a large bed, massive wardrobe space, chest of drawers with a safe inside and very clean and fresh.||Wi-fi was one of the best I have experienced.||I understood why when the owner came around chatting to the guests on Saturday morning and explained he had invested a great deal of money on it.||I mentioned it did seem to go down one night and he explained that there is a box on each floor and if you do the usual switch on and off it will reboot.||The flat screen TV had only three English channels, CNN, Sky and BBC News.||I cannot give any information about places to visit in the area because i was working for the three weeks I spent there.||Breakfast in the morning, was included in the price, it was very restricted but adequate.||The two waitresses in the morning one young and an older lady were very friendly and helpful ||The hotel restaurant was very good both in quality and choice.||The only problem was that the menu was only in German the waiters spoke reasonable English, so no problem.||If you venture out to eat, turn right as you go out of the hotel and walk 10/15 minutes crossing the bridge over the motorway and you will come to an all you can eat Asian buffet restaurant called Kiwano. ||It is expensive for a buffet restaurant with the basic price of 19.90 euro but the food is excellent and so much choice.||Watch the price of a coke because it is nearly as expensive as a .51 bier.||As a matter of interest it is also an hotel ,I viewed the rooms and they looked very good plus they will negotiate on price.||If you turn left outside the hotel a five minute walk will take you to a little Greek restaurant that has excellent food with a very friendly owner who speaks many languages.||Just outside the hotel there are a number of shops that are open through the day. ||In conclusion a nice recently renovated hotel which incidentally is close to Graz airport should you need it at a...
