I chose Golling and Cafe Maier as a central location for Salzburg, Hallstatt and Berchtesgaden. It's close to the autobahn and you can also walk to the train from this property (we took the train to Salzburg). Our stay started badly when after a long drive and arriving at 6:30 p.m., there was no record of our reservation. Despite our having an email with confirmation in hand, it took a long time to sort this out. Basically you're trying to get checked in at a bakery counter with customers coming and going. Had we been much later, the entire place would've been dark and locked up and I'm not sure what we would've done! Also, don't expect a warm welcome with a map of the area attractions and a tour of the premises like we received at other properties. Once we finally were assigned a room, it was on the top floor, very spartan like a dorm room (not even Kleenex), except for the new bathroom (which was very nice). No fan or other ventilation, expect an open window. The bad part is that the front of the property is on a very busy road, so you have to choose between fresh air and noise or quiet and stifling hot. Needless to say we didn't get a lot of sleep. Also, be aware that this property does NOT have parking, so you have to take your care a couple of blocks away to a public parking lot. Our final disappointment was that the cafe and beer garden out front closes down after 7 p.m. So by the time you get back from touring, clean up, change and go out to eat, there's no way you can get back to the cafe in time for coffee and dessert. It's dark! There's no place to sit and socialize in the evenings except at the restaurant next door. So we spent our evenings on our bed reading up in our attic room. Would I stay here again? Probably not. If you do book a room, make sure you're not in the front of the building or the weather is cold enough that you can keep the...

Read moreWe stayed in the top floor penthouse apartment with a view. This apartment is modern, spotless and perfect for a family. It’s bigger then my 1st apartment. I love the separate bedroom suite with a bathroom and a 1/2 bathroom in the living room area. This might sound weird but their bath towels were soft not sandpaper like most pensions in Europe. The Kitchen is modern and fully equipped with a dishwasher. They also have daily housekeeping. ||One whole wall is all windows which open and lead to a huge balcony with chairs and tables. We enjoyed sitting out there in the evenings. Windows had mini blinds plus electric remote shutters. ||According to our techno son they had great WiFi that didn’t slow down. ||We opted for the breakfast buffet and it was superb. Keep in mind this is a backers/pastry shop Pension. Their pastries were yummy!||Only one thing I want to address. They need to replace the overhead light in the bedroom with a ceiling fan. It got very warm and stuffy at night because the bedroom doesn’t have any windows. ||On a final not the owners are extremely friendly...
