Maiskogel Alm Ranch — Restaurant in Kaprun

A fifteen minute trot from the gondola and then you get great food, beautiful views, and extremely friendly farm animals that just want a good scritch behind the ears. Oh, plus everywhere you sit there's a fantastic view.

I had the days special- pork chop with sauteed onions and potatoes in sour cream sauce- and it was some of the best food I've had on my Austrian vacation. Plus the family that owns the place is SUPER nice and friendly, even though we didn't speak much German at all.

If I died on their patio I would consider it an honor and a good life lived.

PROTIP: if you want the (mostly) level walk to this place, check out the photo I posted- my finger is pointed to the stairs that run next to the chairlift station- take those down and then hang a right- takes you straight to the Alm Ranch with a minimum of elevation change. If you have a stroller, then: facing with your back to the chairlift up from Kaprun, walk right down the gravel road towards the restaurant that's next to the station. Great place to go after a mini-walk from the top cable car station. Stunning views both towards Zell (don’t miss the little path around the side to the balcony) and back across towards the bigger mountains. The area is really relaxing and nicely laid out with animals that you can purchase feed for (great for kids) and a small play area too. We only stopped for a snack but the apple strudle was tasty and just right. Other food coming out looked like solid...

Schön gelegen aber leider werden die Tiere sehr schlecht gehalten. Ein Alpaka mit Augenentzündung, eine Katze mit völlig verwahrlostem Fell und ebenfalls einer fortgeschrittenen Augenentzündung sind leider nur der Gipfel des Eisbergs. Alle Tiere leben zusammen in einem sehr kleinen, dreckigen Stall –artgerechte Haltung sieht anders aus. Nachdem ich den Besitzer der Ranch auf den schlechten gesundheitlichen Zustand seiner Tiere aufmerksam gemacht habe, wurde ich nur belächelt und mir wurde gesagt "ich hätte doch keine Ahnung, die Katze sei 100 Jahre alt, da wäre es normal".
