What a lovely location for a brewery! Outside the town of Thuin, ensconced in the tranquil "valley of peace" near the Sambre river, are the old ruins of the Aulne Abbey. It is a scenic drive to get here and you'll be amazed when you see the dilapidated remains of the old abbey walls. The original abbey was founded in 657 as a Benedictine monastery, and in 1147 it became a Cistercian Abbey. By 1794, it was badly damaged during the French revolution, and the monastery was finally abandoned in 1859. In front of the ruins is a large newer brick church, and there is a small driveway back to the brewery. They have a dedicated parking lot and there is additional parking along the main road up the hill. The brewery occupies the ground level of a large old brick and stone building, and there is a simple black and gold sign for the Brasserie. Out front are several patio tables with umbrellas enclosed in a white fence. Inside is a small central circular brick service bar, and the bartender works the taps to fill many glasses of beer. They have 4 house beers on tap, which are available by full pour only. Near the bar is a refrigerated case where they also keep several of their bottled varieties. Their abbey blond and brown ales come in regular strength or delicious premier heavier versions. They also have bottles of Cherie white ales with added cherry or raspberry fruit, and these are very refreshing. The brewery also sells packs of their bottled beer to go. Surrounding the bar are a variety of tables on the stone tile floors. They sell snacks to enjoy with the beer. The space has tall columns supporting numerous brick archways, creating a somber, historic ambience. On the right is a space for their brewery. It has a distinctive cylindrical copper brewing vessel surrounded by tall skinny copper-jacketed steel fermenters. The staff is noticeably aloof, but proficient after you've got their attention. Don't be shy. For the inspiring scenery, and the tasty beer this a brewery definitely worth visiting. Plan to stay a while...
