Benoua Lodge is in a residential neighborhood just off a main road. The lodge is home to a popular restaurant which is busy every night. (I never ate at the restaurant, preferring instead to go to different nearby local restaurants along the main road.) There are 6 or 7 rooms around the border of the restaurant courtyard, and room #8 is in a separate, adjoining courtyard. The first few nights I stayed in room 8. It is private and quiet, and has its own patio with a fan, which I really liked. However it is also on a separate internet connection from the main lodge which is very poor. In addition the lodge's generator is in the same courtyard, so if the city power goes out (and it will) #8 goes from being very quiet to very, very, VERY loud. My last night I stayed in room #3, in the main lodge area. The rooms are separated by a hedge from the restaurant area, so there is some visual privacy, though it is a bit noisy. On the plus side, the internet worked very well in room #3.||||One additional thing to note--the breakfast is not included in the price, and it is (comparatively) very expensive considering that all you get is juice, coffee, bread, and butter. If you have the time, skip the breakfast and wander out to the main road to get an omelette sandwich and cafe au lait. ||||Overall the rooms were clean and pleasant (with aircon, ceiling fan, window screens, and plentiful hot water), the staff is friendly, and--in the main lodge at least--the internet worked well. I would...
Read moreBenoua Lodge where I stayed twice over a period of a month is certainly worth a visit. The location is off the main streets, not a major issue but with the Ouagadougou heat having your own transportation is a plus for this place. Inside the hotel has a pleasant though yet evolving garden. The rooms are in a semi-square around with a thatch roofed hut (dubbing as a seating area for breakfast/lunch etc) and a bar opposite. ||The major upsides are that is sheltered, green and peaceful inside. The rooms are good, not special but certainly adequate, the same for the bathrooms. Everything is spotlessly clean. Facilities include reasonable internet and 1 free breakfast per room. Another good point is the friendly staff who quickly make you feel at home.||Now for some downsides; the cable tv is intermittent and some rooms still lack tv's but still pay the same rates. The rates are ok but not cheap and that is true for the food also: the quality is good but portions are meagre. The owner Benoit is friendly but also not very client oriented and this is particularly true for the hotel (the restaurant appears to be his true passion), only serious complaining spurred him to action. Our room (roof) had leaks and no tv (initially) and he was not very concerned with our comfort and rather more for his own 'expenses'. ||However on the whole the place offers a welcome alternative to the large hotels downtown and I would...
Read moreMy husband and I had a lovely dinner at this hidden restaurant on a recent October night. It lived up to its reputation: my braised eggplant (stuffed with tomato and eggs), the lotte tail, as well as my husband's couscous, were both delicious and came in very generous portions. So much so that I could not finish my lotte. The creme brulee was perfect. We enjoyed the warm atmosphere in the candle lit garden, and a very decent open wine. Service was a bit lackadaisical, but that's nothing new for Ouagadougou, and the staff was definitely friendly. So was the owner, who came in person to explain to me the contents of the braised eggplant. Will visit...
