EDIT 12.04.25 - I'm adding a screenshot of the original response from the owner to my review below. Judge yourself. Also regarding the original answer that was edited - yes we were waiting that long as we do have watches and yes, except for 2 other guys we were the only ones waiting. See original review below:
This is a review of the restaurant, not the hostel as we haven't stayed in this place.
We came in on Monday for a late lunch. At first everything seemed fine. There were only 2 other people waiting for their meals in the restaurant. On the bar there were 2 expats, middle-aged lad and a girl. Prices were quite high comparing to other places in Kampot but we've decided to give it a go as the view was amazing. We have ordered 2 classic wraps, one chicken, one vegetarian with tofu.
After waiting for about 40 minutes I went to the bar and asked if the food was coming any time soon. Staff seemed surprised that I was asking and the girl followed up with a question if we were in the rush. I've said that we've been waiting for 40 minutes already to which the girl ironically repeated my words "40 minutes?", as if she was making fun of me and stating that it's not a long time. Guy behind the bar said that food should be any minute now.
After another 10 minutes of waiting we finally got our wraps. Food was not entirely bad but I can't say it was good either. Wraps were rather dry and half empty inside. Considering 5$ price for each it's a very bad vfm.
So in total we've waited 50 minutes for overpriced and rather poor quality wraps. Considering that there was NO ONE else waiting for food except us and other 2 guys I simply can't understand the wait time. Also the staff for the whole time was chilling on their phones/tablet and didn't bother to check with us or the kitchen what's going on with the order.
I get it, it's supposed to be a chill out hostel which is completely fine, but the service should be at least at some level if you decide to run a restaurant for everyone.
Can't recommend this place. 2/5 only because the view was lovely and food...
Read moreWe chose to stay at The Hideaway for its setting, right on the river and also based on all the reviews of its awesome bar and social vibe, without being an actual backpackers. The two things were spot on for us!
At all times of day, the bar/restaurant is the heart of the place, overlooking the river, with many seating areas and options, plus a floating bamboo terrace with cushions and parasols. Sunset here is a real show!
The food menu was a good mix of western and Khmer food and extensive all-day breakfast options such as burritos and bagels. All delicious and great portions. Special mention for the jalapeño balls!
Cheap kayak and moto rental that was easy to access/organise got us out and about with ease. Unlike other guesthouses we've stayed, the moto rental was through an actual rental company (Red Bull Tours) rather than the property's own. This meant there was actually paperwork filled out (they also kept one of our passports locked in a safe until we returned) and also that the moto itself was in relatively good condition!
Last but not least, the owners and staff (and their cute, cuddly cats and dogs) create a warm, welcoming vibe. Everyone definitely likes a party but while still providing fantastic,...
Read moreWe had a lovely stay at the the hideaway. Such a good mix of chilled out and social vibes, great if you’re a couple or if you want to meet new people. Me and my girlfriend stayed here for 5 nights and it was the perfect place just up from Kampot town centre which made it great to explore the city and have a peaceful swim on the river. The sunsets were a highlight, it looks over the mountains and water. The owners were such lovely people, we got on with them really well. They were super down to earth and easy to get on with but if you wanted your own space they leave you to it. Really helpful at helping us organise local activities (driving up the mountain and salt fields). Happy hour is between 4-6 and the cocktails are banging! Felt like a genuine experience vs staying at either a hotel or hostel the perfect middle ground. Also they have fun platforms to jump off in to the water if you’re in to that and they are right next to the kayaking loop, soo an ideal spot if you wanna adventure on the water. Cannot recommend enough...
