A friend and I were traveling through Sunderland and stopped here for lunch. Boy, what an unexpected surprise! To be honest, we didn’t have high hopes for such a small place in such a small town, but the food turned out to be amazing. My friend ordered the veggie wrap and said it was very good and the fries were incredible. I ordered the vegetable pene in a light cream sauce and it was excellent. As someone else noted, it seems to be a one-man show. The man who took our orders and served our food seems to also be the cook. You might have to wait a little bit to get your food, but it’ll be worth the wait. The only downside was that when we opened the door and walked in, we were hit with cigarette smoke. However, once you’re in the dining area you can’t smell it at all. I don’t know why it hits you at the door and doesn’t follow you into the dining room, but I couldn’t smell it during lunch and my clothes didn’t smell smoky after lunch. They might want to do something about that initial hit of cigarette smoke as you come in the door. It is a very bad first impression.

We thought we'd support local during C-19 for a Friday night pick-up order but we were disappointed - again. The 20 minute wait time was reasonable, but we didn't feel we needed to 'check' our order at the time of pick-up or we would have left it there! We opened our two orders of halibut fish & chips to find them both overcooked & char-burnt in spots! Along with the typical, boring, from-frozen double-cooked fries... We are surprised that there's no thought to offering hand-cut fries from a classic cuisine bistro! The fish was so over-cooked that it was tough to cut it with a knife! A slice of lemon, not a wedge, and dill pickle-juiced tartar. We ate it anyway as we didn't want to bother having to drive elsewhere and it was going on 7pm. Their advertised price of $16.95 for halibut fish & chips was definitely not worth it. This was probably the worst fish & chips we have *ever* had.

Nice desert!! Spent $85 for calamari, two chicken pasta, pictured desert, and iced tea out of the can. No music--just the generic waiting room tv playing. Feels more like a sports bar. I believe there's a bar towards the back and they're open later! Excellent waiter and friendly. Edit: Tried again for Covid takeout. $15 Lamb burgers come with kraft singles and unseasoned meat. $8 Crab cakes were fresh but bland? $6.50 Creme Brulee was again phenomenal. Again, I didn't find the value worthwhile. The quality of the food and ingredients did not meet the price. Can't recommend the place yet, but perhaps I'm just trying all the wrong foods for this place.

Bon Select Bistro is definitely not your average French restaurant. It is a true hidden gem tucked away in the cosy community of Sunderland, just off highway 7/12. Like it's location, it's menu is a pleasant surprise of top notch traditional French and Italian dishes with some innovative South Asian fusion dishes, all offered in a warm, welcoming and unassuming atmosphere. I visit the restaurant regularly (it is about a 30 minute drive from my place) and was overjoyed to be able to order from their full menu during the Covid crisis (take-out only). Be warned, their portions are extremely generous and reasonably priced so be sure to bring your appetite! The arancini ball appetizer is a must try!! The funghi pizza (European style - thin, crispy crust) is mouthwateringly good. I have many favourites, but I most recently tried the salmon roti - a creative recipe of curried lentils, steamed salmon, sauteed greens, fennel + orange - to die for! I am never disappointed by Bon Select Bistro - it is...
