Higher Ground Café — Restaurant in Caledon

On Sunday I took a scenic drive up to Higher Ground with the intention of enjoying a hot beverage with a client but instead I was pleasantly tempted to order the Mediterranean Square and Flatbread - let me tell you that it did not disappoint! Any hunger or savoury cravings you might have will definitely be satisfied by these two delicious options. I’m glad that we decided to order two of each as sharing would not be a voluntary option - once you take the first bite, you will want to finish it entirely on your own! Served warm at just the right temperature, both options were flavourful and the perfect portion size. Naturally we did also enjoy a perfectly frothed cappuccino and latte made to order. They have a great variety of tasty treats and other items for both your home, pantry and even your family pet - so no one is left out. Surrounded by rustic/farmhouse decor, the ambiance is both cozy and comfortable. When weather permits, they even have an outdoor seating area with Muskoka chairs to enjoy your visit and take in the scenery. As the warmer weather arrives, this place is in high demand as many people come to enjoy the nature that surrounds it, so give yourself the time you need to enjoy the experience. While the very young staff cannot be entirely blamed, they were neither adequately trained nor properly supported, the service fell short. There were six sandwiches ahead of me, yet my two took 55 minutes to make. The Hot Honey Chicken sandwich was disappointing: frozen, bland, lacking sauce, and not enjoyable. The Croissant Chicken Salad was dry and did not have much chicken. Both were over priced.

I also noticed some of the new staff members were scooping ice out of the machine with their hands, even though a scoop was available beside them.

Ultimately, the responsibility falls on the owners. If you plan to serve lunch menu items, you must ensure proper training, oversight, and consistency. A dedicated, well-trained staff member should be managing the sandwich station, rather than having everyone take turns trying to figure it out. Stronger leadership and better support for the staff would go a long way toward improving both service and quality.

Higher Ground Cafe is an absolute gem nestled in the heart of Belfountain. It's the perfect pit stop whether you're exploring the charming town or heading to the nearby conservation area for a hike.

The coffee is excellent—freshly brewed and delicious. But what truly sets this place apart are its thoughtful touches. They offer adorable, pet-friendly cookies, so your furry friends can enjoy a treat right along with you. On top of that, there's a convenient ice cream window on the side of the building, making it ideal for a sweet refreshment on a warm day.

The cafe has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere with plenty of seating both inside and out. It’s the kind of place where you can easily relax and unwind.

I highly recommend stopping by and will definitely be returning on my next visit to the area!
