Petu is an Indian restaurant specializing in North Indian cuisine that recently moved into a nondescript strip mall in our neighbourhood of Oakridge in Calgary. The interior is basic - but don’t let that fool you.
The real adventure begins when the food shows up. Every dish was rich and fresh and vibrant and complex. The experience was sublime.
I love Indian food. Most of the time it’s good. Sometimes it’s great. This is great in technicolor. Once you have tried a dish made by a master of the culinary arts - who starts from scratch and only uses the freshest ingredients, you will be spoiled for anything else.
We have visited this culinary oasis many times since our first visit. It's been so good consistently, I'm compelled to review it again.
This time we had goat vindaloo, chicken tandoori, palak paneer, chili chicken and for good measure took a butter chicken home. This was accompanied by ice cold Kingfisher beer and lots of garlic naan.
The flavor balance in all the dishes was perfect. A note on the goat vindaloo: We like spice but heat can be a tricky thing. Not done properly, a dish can lose balance. This was perfect. The dish was spicy, but with beautiful, fresh forward and vibrant flavors to balance and complement the heat. The tandoori chicken had a delicious sear on the outside and was moist and tender on the inside.
I could go on and on. If you’re a foodie and love authentic North Indian cuisine, you owe it to yourself to try Petu.
And a special thanks out to Monica for making all guests feel...
Read moreWe went there as a family with two toddlers just because it was in the vicinity of the Glenmore reservoir and had a quirky name (plus the good reviews sealed the deal) but we're pleased from the moment we stepped on until we left the place. The entire experience was absolutely delicious and delightful. Let's begin with the service, it was not crowded but busy enough on a Saturday evening but the waitress were extremely polite and helpful specially catering to the kids. We ordered panni puri and this was definitely one of the best Pani puri we have had in Calgary and our go to place in future. The portions of Dahi papdi and chole bhatire was good enough for us to be almost full even before the main course started. The food was flavorful and not too oily or spicy (which tends to happen at some Indian restaurants) and a pleasant atmosphere. The desert towards the end could have been a tad better but maybe it's just my sweet tooth talking. End to end must try if you are around or want to experience authentic Indian food. P.S - They had buffet too but maybe that's a reason...
Read moreI’ve had the pleasure of dining at Petu twice now, and both experiences have been absolutely outstanding. If you’re looking for authentic, flavorful Indian cuisine in Calgary, this place is a must-visit.
On both occasions, the food was exceptional. One of my personal favorites is the Methi Malai Chicken —a rich and creamy dish with just the right balance of flavors from fenugreek and smooth chicken. It’s a comfort food that never disappoints. Another standout for me is the Gobi Parathas—fluffy, perfectly cooked, and packed with just the right amount of spiced cauliflower filling. Paired with some yogurt and pickle, it’s a delightful combination.
The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the staff is always friendly and attentive, ensuring a memorable dining experience. The consistency of quality is also worth noting—both times, the food has been spot on.
I highly recommend this place to anyone in Calgary craving top-notch Indian food. Whether you’re a long-time lover of Indian cuisine or new to it, you’re bound to leave satisfied and...
