Luxury done wrong- sommelier a bit gauche Langdon Hall is an “ old English-Stately” type setting that is looking tired and run down. Langdon hall is a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux association, I found the property did not live up to its luxury label. My first bad impression started in the bathroom. They seem to be having plumbing issues: toilet didn’t flush all the way and the sink didn’t drain completely. In the dining room, our table felt as though the top would tip off its base if enough weight was placed on the edge. The service was underwhelming. The waitress was polite and friendly but lacked the finesse an establishment with the only five-diamond award wining restaurant in Ontario would have. The real disappointment happened when the sommelier came to our table and immediately gave off an air of pretentiousness, drilling us on our overall knowledge of wine. The sommelier gave us two different whites to try but we didn’t like them. The whole wine choosing experience was so unpleasant that we almost rushed into choosing anything so the sommelier would lay off. Fortunately, unfortunately, the sommelier suggested a delicious white from the Burrowing Owl winery- quoting a price we were comfortable spending. We were later surprised to find a price much higher than the price quoted by the sommelier on the final bill. We brought this to the attention of the waitress and then we were directed to speak to the manager Katie. Katie was very understanding and was prepared to honour the price we said we were quoted. The sommelier joined the conversation and began to play semantics in order to attempt to persuade his manager into believing he had not incorrectly quoted the price of the bottle of wine. The conversation went from cordial to confrontational within seconds of the sommelier joining the discussion. The manager was quick to end the conflict and arranged for the final bill to be corrected. Perhaps the sommelier was having a bad day but not a 5 star experience. Redeeming feature is the food quality. The Ling Cod was possibly the best Cod dish...
Read moreWe were there for a two nights package, which included two dinners and two breakfast. We also had one lunch there.
We had ups and downs for the food experiences. Our first lunch that's outside of the packaged price was underwhelming. We ordered the poached lobster (which was great), the chowder and the lamb. Both chowder and the lamb came to us lukewarm and the taste was okay only. The lamb only had two pieces which the portion is relatively small compare to the pricing. We also didn't served bread at lunch. We found out everyone got served bread except us during dinner. The server did apologized to us and offer to give us a loaf of sourdough bread to bring home (which we were never given).
On the menu, there are a lot of sous vide food. I am 27 weeks pregnant which restricted many options for me because they are raw. Comparing to other fine dining restaurants I have been recently, the chef/server didn't try their best to accommodate my dietary restriction. So keep that in mind if you are going to dine there when you are expecting.
Food temperature again was an issue for us during one dinner, where we order the poached crab, king salmon and smoked beef. Everything were lukewarm again and just doesn’t have a pleasant mouthfeel. The poached crab had some edible flower on it and we found there’s a small bug crawling around. We did sent it back and they prepared us a new one.
Breakfast was definitely worth the value. The variety of the items are very good and many for you to choose from.
Our last dinner at the restaurant with Smoked Beef (yes we ordered again and this time it’s hot) and Turkey, that's excellent. The food arrives in good temperature and was really enjoyable.
Dinner dessert was also a highlight for us. From the Raspberry, Strawberry and Rhubarb to the Pumpkin Creme Brulee, all are done very well and I would love to have those again.
One other complain is that the restaurant has small flies flying around all the time. That was quite annoying and affect the...
Read moreSuch a lovely experience from the minute we pulled up to the minute we drove away. The staff were so kind and attentive, even holding up an umbrella for me as I stepped out of the car because it was raining!
Food wise, everything was solid and some were excellent! They do have a tasting menu but we wanted try a bunch of diff things since it was our first time there so we went off the à la carte menu. Our faves were the truffle gnudi (stuffed pasta), marinated beef (aka tenderloin steak) and the halibut!
Drinks: very tasty!! We went with an amaretto based drink and a pandan cocktail
Apps: Amuse bouche: I blacked out and forgot what the waiter said (LOL) but it was a sort of melon with a herby and floral sauce on top - very good and I don’t even like melon! Bread & butter: tomato bread and sourdough were great although I do wish everything was just a tad warm to allow the butter to melt Dressed crab: solid! lighter tasting Foie gras parfait: very nicely balanced, wish there was a bit more strawberry jam though to cut through the heaviness of the foie gras! Truffle gnudi: WOW this ricotta stuffed pasta was everything you would ever want, so pillowy, so truffley YUM
Mains: Marinated beef aka tenderloin steak: soooo beefy, so juicy, perfectly medium rare, the potato frisée was v crispy and i loved having bites with the cauliflower Halibut: the most stand out dish imo! Perfectly cooked flaky fish went so well with the roasted bell pepper, zucchini, and diced tomato. Truly a welcome surprise!!
Dessert: Mille feuille: very loose interpretation of the cake haha but still very good, crispy pastry layers with chocolate paired well with a london fog ice cream Chocolate butterscotch cake: nice and chocolatey lightened with creme fraîche ice cream - solid
Overall, the one big word to describe the food here is “texture” - they did a great job contrasting textures. We loved our time here! We will definitely be back for a staycation and spa day with...
