A J's Dining Room & Lounge — Restaurant in Canso

We were staying in Guysborough for two weeks and on one of our tours we went through Canso. It was lunch time so we decided to stop into AJ's for a bite to eat. Great service and prices. The staff were very friendly and attentive. They made us feel welcomed. My wife had the 10 scallops and onion rings and thoroughly enjoyed them. Jan stated that they were lightly breaded, not greasy and were the best that she has ever had. Me being a vegetarian, I had the vegetarian pizza. Great taste and the crust was the best that I have had in a long time. Jan took a couple of pieces and enjoyed them as well. Jan never eats the crust but devoured this crust this time. Not doughy at all more like a crusty roll. We are from Ontario and really enjoyed this food experience. The washrooms were clean and stocked. A nice down-home environment. I love small town restaurants so I was looking forward to our visit here while camping at sea breeze campground but oh my what a let down. Maybe I should have tried the pizza bc I think that's where the good reviews come from. I expected good fish and chips being in a coastal town but wow, that was absolutely disgusting. The fish was deep fried so hard, I almost chipped a tooth and the color of the batter tells me the oil has not been changed in a long time. It was frozen garbage so very disappointed. My son ordered chicken strips and it was the same dark,over cooked food and he even had some frozen fries on his plate STILL FROZEN. The atmosphere was loud and obnoxious. We did not receive napkins, salt or pepper, knives....nothing. I had to get up and grab some from other tables. You're lucky you are the only place in town bc I doubt you would get...

I was extremely happy with my meal at AJs! The pizza was delicious, tons of toppings and amazing crust. My mom got fish and poutine which was also very good, some of the best fish I've had in a while! Very crunchy, fresh and cooked perfectly. I think one of the best things about this place was the friendly customer service, that's what takes a resturant from good to great!...
