This is Thai food from scratch, using fresh ingredients and, it seems, a lot of love. The food is prepared in a food truck but Phalika's has seating inside or at some picnic tables outside.
We ordered the Prawn Tom Yum, Chicken Red Curry, and salad rolls. The soup ($17) popped with the very well balanced flavors of galangal, coconut, lemon grass and lime leaf. The 'prawns' were small (I'd guess 36/40 shrimp per pound) and obviously previously frozen so they were a bit lacklustre, but overall the soup was fantastic.
The curry ($15) was equally delicious, and very hearty, with plenty of carrots, bamboo shoots, and red pepper. We asked for it very spicy but I think Phalika was trying to protect us and it arrived needing more chili. She provides dried crushed chili on the side but half a bird's eye pepper would have brought that extra peppery brightness. Again, though....so good, and served with glutinous rice on the side
We all agreed that the salad rolls ($7) provided the best value: three large rolls with two homemade peanut dips. The rolls were packed, and there's little else on a hot day that is as satisfying and refreshing as a good salad roll. These were made with the same shrimp as the soup, but otherwise they were top notch.
We balked a bit at the menu prices, considering this was a food truck in Devon serving what is effectively street food. But at the end of the meal we found ourselves asking for takeout containers because three of us couldn't get through all of it. It ended up being well worth the money.
If I had one hang-up about the meal it was the disposable dinnerware with plastic cutlery. I imagine this is because Phalika's doesn't have a dishwasher, but I found myself wincing when I realized how much garbage my meal was creating, especially with the switch to takeout at the end. I can understand it on a food truck, but it would be much better and I'd be more inclined to return if the sit-down restaurant used...
ย ย ย Read moreMy boyfriend and I stopped here earlier today around 7pm. Phalika's restaurant and ice cream window were both not busy at all, and we walked into the restaurant side to order as it was slightly chilly to wait outside at the window. The guy working was very friendly and nice, but did seem to be all by himself. He took a little while in the back grabbing the cones, but I never could've anticipated why- the size of these cones. On the left is the two scoop, on the right is the one scoop. The waffle cones were so fresh, the Chapman's ice cream was good as always, but it was the size of these things that surprised me. 100% bang for your buck here, definitely go here if big portions are important to you. (If you can see my boyfriends hand compared to the cone, the ice cream is massive!) Great experience and would honestly consider the drive to Devon to get this ice...
ย ย ย Read moreI usually stop in for the Thai food. Always good. Today I went in for the Fish and Chips. I got there 10 minutes before they were to open (1100 am) I was on chat with another company, so I didn't mind waiting a bit. However, after 11 am came and went, I phoned the restaurant to check if they were opening. No reply, but I did leave a message that I was outside of their restaurant and have been so for half an hour. The restaurant finally opened 1 hour 15 minutes later than their posted hours. I asked the young feller who took my order what time they open. He told me 11. I mentioned I'd been sitting in my vehicle for over an hour for them to open. No apologies. He said, "Yeah, we opened late today. " Really, I hadn't noticed. So, not impressed by that attitude. Food is always good, but I am irritated by that...
