I was highly recommended this place by a co-worker and a friend, we were trying to decide on a restaurant and happened to be near by and decided to finally go check Ma Chef out.
We went about 90 minutes before closing and this place was still extremely busy, we were lucky a couple tables were already leaving.
The menu is quite small so it's easier to make a selection which is always nice. It made it easy to look at what other tables were eating and decide based off of that. The spicy pork ribs were not very spicy at all, which is fine for someone that does not like things too spicy, but if you like spicy you'll be disappointed as I did not even consider it remotely hot, perhaps next time I'll ask if they can make it extra spicy but usually when an item is claimed to be spicy you can at least feel some heat, regardless the flavour and texture was on par and became my new favourite (normally I only get gal-bi which they do not have).
The chicken was a bit expensive, but they entered in my top 5 favourite Korean fried chicken, they would be in my top 3 if they were either bigger, full size pieces of chicken (not wings), or they offered more wings (by weight not by piece).
Our favourite was the steamed tofu, we ended up getting a second order of it.
Overall I'll be heading back here if I am in the area and there's open spots. I hope they open a second location soon and add gal-bi...
Read moreThis is my third time going to Ma chef and this is my favourite korean restaurant in the city without doubt. They recently changed their menu a bit and added a few special dishes, one of them being their grilled chicken. The chicken is cooked very nicely that the skin is crisp and the meat is soft and tender. One of the appetizers we had was yuhkoe. This is a small traditional korean style raw beef salad and it is a must try for any meat lovers. According to my knowledge this restaurant is the only place that serves this salad in the city. Last but not least, their gumjatang soup is full of flavour and rich in texture along with soft and tendor pork. This is a locally owned family restaurant and they are professional in their service, the friendliest people I have encountered. You can tell that the chef has a passion for making food based on the quality and presentation of the dishes. Despite this, they do not offer a large range of side dishes apart from kimchi, but the restaurant makes up for it through their service, great quality food and very affordable prices!! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants to have a glimpse into what korean food tastes like or even a...
Read moreYEG’s Korean food scene is always top notch and MaChef seems to be another addition to the trend.
Flavors were well balanced and the chef/owner knows exactly how to bring out the specific flavor unique to each dish.
Beef tartare salad is a definite must try. The applewood smoke used in the dish is definitely not a gimmick that many hipster places have come to make it seem so.
Considering how Korean food is difficult present well, MaChef nails it with its presentation as well as the flavors to back them up.
Service is very Korean, in a sense that after the initial ordering, they try to let you enjoy your food with minimal, while they are extremely attentive when you raise your hand to seek their service (it’s not considered rude, but more so a standard).
I understand the few negative comments and gripe about service in other reviews, but they are pretty unwarranted if you are used to or understand the Korean food service culture.
