The Flying Chestnut Kitchen — Restaurant in Grey Highlands

So disappointed 😞 we have been waiting 3 years for our schedule to line up to when one of the open weekends would happen. You see this restaurant does not have regular business hours it opens randomly when the owner is available. You need to follow on Instagram to get notice of when there will be service. We were so excited to go! It's a really great building and the restaurant itself is not huge but has a good vibe. The service staff is friendly and attentive. You have to be adventurous with what you will eat as you have no idea until you arrive what will be on the menu. We order starters, I had lobster and goats cheese fries, they were underseasoned but other wise tasty. Others at the table had a Mediterranean salad and it was very good. We were so pleased! For mains we ordered fajitas, pickerel and a mushroom rabbit pasta.

First off, the veg sides of some kind of corn, pureed carrot, and undercooked broccoli were served with every main.. with the fish, I understood the pairing, but with the pasta and the fajitas, it was a strange mix. The fajitas were horribly tough. The pasta lacked flavour.. there was a single note of the rabbit and that was it. The pickerel main was the best by far for all around composition but the portion of the fish felt small.

The mains were priced between $36 to $42, so at that price and the chef's reputation, we were expecting more.

We were staying in Eugenia over the holidays and booked a reservation here as we had enjoyed some of Shawn's food in Toronto when he was serving up brunch in Kensington Market. Having enjoyed his food before we had high expectations. Well this meal definitely did not disappoint! The portions were generous and every bite was packed with flavour. I had the red snapper while my husband had the duck confit. The sides served with our meal were amazing and we were surpirsed to get a few little starter bites before our meal for free which were a welcome sight as we were very hungry. Our server was friendly and the atmosphere felt cozy and homey. We really appreciated the art displayed in the space including the coloured glass chandeliers! If we ever are up in this area again we will defintiely make the time to visit again!

A wonderful experience! I was part of a group of five and they seated us, even though we didn't have a reservation and the restaurant was already very full. The food was mouth-watering, and worth every dollar spent. Our server was kind, diligent and an absolute pleasure. The Flying Chestnut Kitchen is a genuinely warm, and inviting place that is full of charm. It is clear that the staff take great pride in their work, and will go the extra mile to enrich the customer experience. Our evening there was beyond what words can communicate. This restaurant makes all others pale...
