Nellie's Chinese Food and Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Hamilton

My wife and I have been searching in vain on Hamilton Mountain for decent Chinese food. Place after place is just your average run of the mill, pedestrian food until we discovered Nellie's. One of the best ways to judge these establishments is through their s/s chicken balls and the proportion of meat to batter. Nellie's hit a home run in this respect. A huge chunk of white breast meat adorned by just the right amount of batter. Most places are the exact opposite. As soon as we took the lid off the s/s sauce we knew it was a winner as well. A deep, rich dark red colour means super flavourful sauce and it didn't disappoint. The entire order was spot on flavour wise and the portion sizes were some of the biggest we've seen in a while. We had one more big serving the next day and a small one the following day. I was greeted with a friendly smile the second I walked through the doorway and again when someone else came up to the counter. First time customer. I ordered online through the restaurants site. The site was easy to navigate. I took advantage of their 10% discount. When a restaurant offers their own delivery, I appreciate it. Using other platforms of delivery tend to add more fees and service charges. I'd rather that money go directly to the restaurant. Delivery was great and the food arrived hot.

My order of Dinner for 2 (2 egg rolls, sweet & sour chicken balls, chicken chow Mein, and chicken fried rice) and the shrimp with lobster sauce was good. Complimentary crab Rangoon as well if you order $50 and over. Egg rolls were okay, not too much filling though. Chicken chow mein is pretty standard. Sweet & sour chicken balls were standard, a little soft and not as crispy. Chicken fried rice was a little dry for my liking. What definitely helped the rice, was the shrimp in lobster sauce. I really liked the shrimp in lobster sauce. It had a good amount of shrimp. Flavor was great and sauce had the thickness of a gravy, which was great over the rice.

Its official I think I have tried everything on the menu only took a year lol, I love this place!!!. Why 3 stars I'll explain. The Chinese food is flipping amazing, I just had the fish and chips and I was disappointed because its the same half ass flash frozen crap everyone else uses in Hamilton. The staff is a hit and miss, better when you stay in to eat. You can order something, go out for a smoke then come back and they completely forget who you are and your order, just happened and it wasn't even busy. It is very quick service and food comes out fast, decently prices and the portions most times you eat for days and I love that. I will still eat there but only the Chinese food, if you skip the fish and chips you ain't out much.
