We were passing along the highway between Ontario on the way back to Winnipeg and finally starting to feel hungry, so I looked for anything that was open. I found a McDonalds. A Subway. Sigh. Were we resigned to fast food at 10pm? Then I found Clooch's Tavern. A late night haven in an ocean of early sleepers. I wasn't sure what to expect.
Partly, I was right: the menu is dominantly American style food. Pizza, wings, burgers, sandwiches. Beer and cider to drink. Country music and sports playing.
Partly, I was wrong. Multiple salads available. Clean bathroom and well lit dining area, music wasn't too loud so we could talk and dine. Normally there's a Saturday night DJ so that might not always be the case. Folk were friendly even though we were clearly not from around here. I ordered the best jalapeno poppers I've ever had: not too greasy, cooked enough to sever the jalapeno with my teeth instead of pulling it all out. I ordered the pyrogies, and got pyrogies smothered in actual bacon (not fake out bacon bits) and fried onion with a side of sour cream, and my friend ordered a chicken burger. Huge salads on the side (though fries were an option too). Food wasn't too salty. We both left with a takeaway container because of the huge portions. Beer was served in cans, which I don't mind, because you know exactly what you're going to get. They had a few craft options from nearby breweries (I saw Lake of the Woods, Barking Squirrel and Sleeping Giant), a few options for Somersby Cider.
My only regret is that I wasn't hungry enough to also try the wings and get a dessert, because I saw them going out to other customers and they looked REAL good.
Service was good, relatively fast and attentive enough, friendly server made sure we had everything we needed when we needed it even though I think she might have been the only one working the tables Saturday night.
If I lived anywhere near here, I would definitely return. I had a positive experience and enjoyed my meal. If you want a late night burger and you're on the 17 in the area, Clooch's might be your only choice besides McDonalds or gas station cuisine, but you'll probably be happy with its menu and...
Read moreI stayed 20 minutes and nothing was done well. The server forgot my drink and got my dad wrong. I ordered the soup 🤮 only word was gross in many ways. 1st I was told it was a cream soup, wrong. I was brought a bowl of bland thick spaghetti sauce. Not 1 drop of cream, the bacon was pizza bacon crumble and some bazil ribbons. My son used it to dip his pizza. My dinner consisted the lonely slice of garlic bread that was burnt and when we tried to nicely tell the server, she dismissed the issue said she would remove it from our bill and walked away. Never asked me if I would like anything else or to see the menu again. So, I left so I didn't have to watch my family eat, while I was hungry. (I'm insulin dependent diabetic) I had to eat some candy to counter the insulin I took for my expected meal. 🤬
The owner should fire chef boyare don't kno how to cook! Find a different line of work
